DR. HEMAVATHI A/P SHANMUGAM

Dr Hemavathi Shanmugam is a psychiatrist and medical lecturer with the Department of Psychological Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya. She has over ten years of experience in psychiatry as a medical officer and clinical specialist under the Ministry of Health, Malaysia.  Dr Hemavathi joined the University Malaya in 2024 to pursue her passion for teaching and mental health research. Her areas of interest include mood disorders and neuromodulation. She underwent attachment at the Neuromodulation Clinic, University Malaya Medical Centre and actively collaborates with the rehabilitation team to provide transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for patients with mood disorders. Dr Hemavathi completed the International Certification Course for TMS in USA with a scholarship from the Clinical TMS Society in March 2025. She is a member of the Asian Special Interest Council, CTMSS. She is committed to making TMS services accessible at the Psychological Medicine Department, UMMC and contributing to the rapidly advancing TMS research for psychiatric disorders.
