Biography | |
I graduated with MBBS degree from University of Malaya in 1981. Following a one-year of housemanship I joined the Dept of Ophthalmology, University of Malaya in 1982 to pursue my training in Ophthalmology. In 1983 I passed the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons(FRACS) Part 1 Examinations and the American Visa Qua;ifying Examinations (VQE). In 1986 I continued my Ophthalmology specialty training in the UK and passed the Royal College of Surgeons(FRCSE) Examinations. In 1987 I left for USA to undertake a fellowship under two world renowned Paediatric Ophthalmologists and Strabismologists, Professoer Dr Eugene Helveston and Professor Dr Daryl Ellis at Indiana University. In 1993 I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). I am also a Fellow of the American Associaton of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and a Member of the International Strabismus Association (ISA). I am also a council member for the Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Society, Malaysia. My clinical areas of expertise include paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, phacoemulsification cataract surgery, cornea, and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) treatment. My research interests include molecular diagnosis and its application in ophthalmology, antibiotics and external corneal diseases, genetics, inflammatory markers of ocular diseases, the effect of of anti-VEGF on human tenon fibroblasts, and retinal vascular changes in various ocular diseases. Besides clinical work and research, I am extensively involved in the training of ophthalmologists in this country. I have more than 75 peer-reviewed publications to date and some of my articles have been published in top Ophthalmology journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive surgery, Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science and Ophthalmology. Five of my postgraduate students have obtained distinctions for their thesis. I am a reviewer for Molecular Vision, BMC Cancer, BMC Ophthalmology, IOVS, Neurology Asia, Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health, and IJO. I am also an Editorial board member of the International Journal of Ophthalmology. I have also been a recipient of the University of Malaya Excellence award thrice and in 2016 was given an achievement award by the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. I have done many charity ad teaching projects in my field for international organizations such as Christofoel Blinder Mission(CBM). It has included countries as diverse as Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Belize, East Timur, Myanmar, and northwest Frontier Pakistan. I am a patron of The International Eye Foundation based in the Netherlands. I am currently a consultant for ORBIS and have coedited their refraction manual. I have also done teaching slides that have been posted on their website as part of the e-learning programme.
