Daniel Chow Ung T’chiang (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. He was the former Deputy Dean (Research, 2022) and former Deputy Dean (Research and Development, 2020-2022). His areas of interest include English for Specific Purposes and Critical Genre Analysis. He is currently involved in research projects on Professional Discourses and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Daniel is the Treasurer of the Malaysian Association of Applied Linguistics (MAAL), an affiliate of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA), and the Treasurer for the AILA2024 Congress.
show more »DR. AHMAD ZAHIRUDDIN MOHD ZABIDI is a Senior Lecturer in the Malay Studies Programme, Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Before starting service at APM UM, he first served as a lecturer at IIUM Pagoh branch, Johor, and worked as a part-time e-tutor for core subjects such as Tamadun Islam Tamadun Asia (TITAS), Falsafah dan Isu Semasa (FIS) at Open University Malaysia since January 2022. He received his Bachelor of Hons. Public Management from Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah in 2012, MA of Art Malay Studies from Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 2020, and Ph.D. of Islamic Civilization from Institut Islam Hadhari, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Selangor in 2023 with a thesis entitled, "Pendekatan Dakwah Melalui Penulisan Kisah Nabi dan Rasul Menurut Teks Suntingan Hamdan Hassan Berjudul Surat al-Anbiya' (1990)" (Approach of Da'wah Through Writing The Stories of Prophets and Messengers According to Hamdan Hassan's Editing Text Title Surat al-Anbiya' (1990)). His expertise is Malay Socio-Religous Thought, Malay-Islamic Civilization, and the Methodology of Da'wah Writing. Among his academic books are Pemikiran Satira dalam Penulisan Dakwah (Satire Thought in Da'wah Writing) (Kota Bharu: University Malaysia Kelantan Press, 2022), Pengantar Falsafah & Isu Semasa (Introduction to The Philosophy and Current Issues) (Tanjung Malim: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Press, 2022) and a chapter in an edited book entitled Ketokohan dan Sumbangan Pemikir Islam Alam Melayu (Prominence and Contribution of Malay Islamic Thinkers) (Kuala Lumpur: University Malaya Press, 2022). His articles have also been published in several journals such as journal Al-Hikmah, BITARA International Journal of Civilizational Studies and Human Sciences, Jurnal Melayu Sedunia, UFUQ International Journal of Arts and Social Science Research, and Al-Irsyad: Journal of Islamic and Contemporary Issues. Before assuming the role of a lecturer and academician at the University of Malaya, he had over 15 years of extensive involvement in the publishing industry. During this period, he served as a managing editor and acquisition editor at PTS Publishing House, Institut Terjemahan Buku Malaysia (ITBM), Karangkraf Media Group, and IIUM Press. Additionally, he remained actively engaged in writing and publishing creative and semi-academic works through various popular and private publications, including print and online mass media. As a managing and acquisition editor and writer, he managed the publication of over 100 books across various genres, including academic works, authored more than 30 books spanning diverse genres, and contributed hundreds of articles and essays to newspapers, magazines, and online portals. In addition, he was actively invited as a speaker for book writing workshops. He delivered lectures in universities, mosques, and government/private office premises related to his field of studies, which focuses on socio-religious thought in Malay society, the Malay world, and Malay history.
show more »Dr. Mumtaz Aini Alivi is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She earned her Bachelor of Art (Hons) with a double major in (i) Language and Malay Linguistics and (ii) Journalism from Universiti Putra Malaysia. She earned her Master of Corporate Communication and Doctor of Philosophy (Mass Communication) from the same university.Her research interests and focuses are mainly in Journalism, Broadcasting, News, Online Media, Political Communication, and Mass Communication. Apart from her academic qualifications, Dr. Mumtaz also has broad experiences in journalism, news, broadcasting, and media industry management. She was a media practitioner for twenty-two years in a government television station, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). For almost twenty years, she was attached to the News and Current Affairs department, where she was involved with multitasking work in her position as Broadcast Journalist, Newscaster, News Editor, and News Producer. Her service to RTM exposed her to many challenging assignments, including following the prime minister and country leaders for international news coverage abroad, doing live news coverage and news reporting from the parliament, and other important events in the country, apart from daily news coverage. Upon completion of her PhD, Dr. Mumtaz was given a different task in RTM as Assistant Director for the Policy and Research section. Later, she held the same position in the Strategic Planning section before being transferred to the Quality Control for Creative Content Unit as Evaluation Officer. These three different sections are under the Strategic Development Department, where she spent another two more years in RTM. During her service in RTM, she also worked for a few months in Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) as a journalist under the government staff exchange program between RTM and BERNAMA. She gained valuable experiences through the BERNAMA newswire service and BERNAMA TV. Prior to joining RTM, she completed her internship in a private TV station, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia (TV3). In total, she has extensive exposure and experience in the media industry, particularly in the news department, mainly in TV, some experience in radio, and in managerial and management duties. Her passion and enthusiasm for journalism finally culminated to winning the Best Broadcast Journalist award in 2001 at the national level.Being in the media industry for more than two decades and having academic qualifications in the same field, she was also appointed by few organizations for various tasks and consultancy work. Dr. Mumtaz was appointed as one of the panel of judges for the prestigious Malaysian Journalism Award organized by Malaysia Press Institute (MPI), panel for Pitching Evaluation (Private) and Panel for Screening (Syndicated) for programs in RTM, think tank member of Ciber Generation Laboratory in Institute for Social Science Studies (IPSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, and expert advisor for Promotion and Publicity in the University of Malaya. She is also on the editorial board of the Malaysian Journal of Media Studies.Dr. Mumtaz decided to shift from being a media practitioner to an academic staff at the University of Malaya in 2021 and begin a new career path with a bigger mission. She believes the educational field is the right platform to share all her knowledge and experience for the nation’s development and shape future leaders.
