CHIEW Poh Shin (周宝芯, 周寶芯) is a senior lecturer in the Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. She earned her Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD from Nanjing Normal University, specialising in Chinese language and linguistics. Her primary research interests include phonetics and phonology, language variation, and language acquisition. Currently, she focuses on sociophonetics and prosodic studies, particularly in the varieties of Chinese like Hokkien, Cantonese, and Mandarin. She has a deep passion for human speech and wants to explore how speech sounds connect with cognition, society, and culture. Beyond academic research, she enjoys science communication work, sharing the fascinating world of linguistics with the public. Here is her first experience on a podcast.

She is also the Founder and CTO of IOMInsight, a business pod under UMI Sdn Bhd focused on developing Economic System modeling for scenario analyses involving 62 countries and 35 economic sectors. With over 9 years of experience in consultancy work with government and private agencies, such as PwC, ILO, EPU (currently known as the Ministry of Economy), MOHR (currently known as KESUMA),MASTIC, CIDB, SOSCO, WorldBank, JPAL, PE Research Sdn Bhd and etc), she also actively involved in research collaboration work with the University of Pennsylvania, World Bank,J-PAL, Singapore Food Agency and local/international Universities/Institutions. She has contributed to research and book publications, facilitate learning and programme development, and foster professional growth together with the stakeholders of the University.
show more »Suraya Hamid completed her for Bachelor of Information Technology (Industrial Computing) 1998 and Master in Information Technology (Comp. Sc.) 2000 from The National University of Malaysia. Obtained Ph.D. from the Department of Computing and Information Systems, The University of Melbourne in 2013. She is an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Malaya, Malaysia. She has also completed her tenure as the Head of Department (Information Systems) from August 2014- July 2017 and Deputy Dean of Students Affair 1/1/22 until 28/2/2025. Suraya was involved in various research in the areas of information systems specifically on social informatics, educational technology, information services, e-learning, and data analytics. Established collaboration with international and national research collaborators for various research grants. Her works were also published in respectable ISI and SCOPUS indexed journals as well as presented at various international conferences. She actively supervises many students at all levels of study from undergraduate and post-graduate. She active with students’ activities as local and international level. Suraya also involves with MyAIS and AIS (Association of Information Systems), AKRAB UM and various community projects.
