Dr. Fung Shin Yee is a biochemist, receiving her degree from the University of Malaya. She actively pursues her interest in natural compounds focusing on medicinal mushrooms. She obtained her PhD in Molecular Medicine in 2008 (University of Malaya) embarking on a joint project with University of Siena, Italy and is a recipient of a fellowship from the Embassy of Italy in Malaysia (2003-2004). Dr. Fung first joined the Department of Molecular Medicine (previously known as the Department of Biochemistry) in 2000 as a tutor; in 2008 and 2015, served as a senior lecturer and Associate Professor, respectively. She was promoted to be a Professor in 2021. She leads the Medicinal Mushroom Research Group (MMRG) and has immense interest in Malaysia’s National Treasure, the Tiger Milk mushrooms (Lignosus sp.) amongst other medicinal mushrooms. Her innovative work with Lignosus sp. has won her several prestigious international and local prizes - including the much coveted Prix Du Salon International Des Inventions De Geneva and ITEX Gold awards ; and a number of Malaysian patents. Her interest also includes other prized medicinal mushroom such as the Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Antrodia camphorata, Inonotus obliquus (Chaga), Sanghwang - to name a few. Her previous involvement with the Venom and Toxin Research Group (VTRG) in the Department of Molecular Medicine that works on snake venom toxinology has granted her a lucrative experience in the field of toxinology and toxicology; and has propelled her current research interest. Her research endeavours utilize a multidisciplinary approach in her methodology with multiple collaborators both local and international. Her work transcended from bench to bedside - a translational research that aims to bring the Malaysian medicinal gem to good use, promoting wellness to humankind. As a person constantly intrigue by the answers provided by nature for the problems faced in human health and social issues, she strongly believe that nature has many hidden secrets, which if one can tap into, will provide many solutions and platform from which to learn from. This has led her to her primary interest in natural compounds with healing properties. Her work has been published in many high impact articles in international journals and books. She is the Founder and CTO of Essenti Nutrien Sdn. Bhd. who specialises and pioneers the ACE Technology, well known for their flagship product, the xLr®. She is a Fellow with Royal Society of Biology (RSB), United Kingdom and hold various leadership position. She is the Vice President of the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB) which is an adhering body to the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB) and The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB). She has also been elected into the Nomination Committee of the IUBMB. She also currently serves as the Vice President of The Organization for Women in Science (OWIS), part of the Organization for Women in Science of the Developing World (OWSD) - a UNESCO programme unit. show more »Dr. Mohd Fairuz Zamani (better known as Fairuz Zamani) is currently attached to the Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya (UM) as an academic.His current research interest is within the realm of music compositions by Malaysian contemporary composers and establishing musical frameworks for the works by these composers. Apart from academic work, Dr. Fairuz writes music for various occasions. He has been a member of the Malaysian Composers Collective since 2022. Under this organization, he premiered Phrygian Fantasy (2023), Kenyalang Rhapsody (2022), and Two Miniatures (2022). During his time with Koir Kebangsaan Malaysia and Permata Seni Koir as the resident arranger, he composed two works commissioned by the Department of Culture and Arts of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) - Nuance of Rebab Fantasy (2013) and Mek Mulung Cycle (2018), in addition to countless music arrangements for choir with piano or orchestral accompaniment for various concerts. Dr. Fairuz continues to write choir arrangements for performances and competitions, and many of his arrangements have been sung by national and international award-winning choirs. Dr. Fairuz is also an active performer and adjudicator. Among notable recent performances were Music of Johan Othman and Razak Aziz (2023), Pini di Roma (2023), and The Carnival of the Animals (2022) with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia, and Beethoven's 250th Birthday Celebration Concert at the German Embassy Kuala Lumpur (2021). Recently, Dr. Fairuz adjudicated the MAME Folksong Festival (Piano category) and the 2nd China-ASEAN Music and Arts Cultural Exchange in 2024.
show more »As a highly accomplished computer scientist and data mining expert with over 35 years of experience, I have demonstrated exceptional leadership, expertise, and vision in the field. Over the course of my career, I have achieved numerous successes and made significant contributions to the industry. I began as an entry-level computer programmer in 1988 and advanced to become a Professor of Data Mining at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Malaya. I obtained my tertiary academic qualifications from Oklahoma City University and the University of Malaya, and I have published more than 90 academic papers in top-tier journals, including Information Fusion and the International Journal of Information Management. I have a remarkable H-index and number of citations in Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholars databases, and I have supervised numerous students at all levels of study. My areas of research include data warehouse, data mining, deep learning, IoT, activity recognition, wearable sensors, accelerometers, heart arrhythmia, electrocardiograph, supraventricular premature beat, multivariate time series, edge computing, task scheduling, data streams, mobile computing, speaker verification, language recognition, clustering algorithms, MapReduce, stock market, and sentiment analysis. I have received several grants of more than RM one million, including public, international, and private grants, and I have completed two commercial data science projects for Petronas GTD and Air Liquide. I serve as an Associate Editor for Human-Media Interaction - Frontiers in Psychology and a reviewer for several high-quality journals. I am also an Expert Advisory Panel for Master of Science (Data Science) Degree Program at UTP, Programme Advisory Panel for Bachelor of Business (Honors) in Business Analytics at TARUC, and an external assessor of Swinburne University of Technology (BS of Computer Science program). Additionally, I am an External Assessor for Programme Master Sciences (Computer and Information Engineering), IIUM, and a technical assessor of Swiss National Science Foundation. I have been teaching data mining since 2002, and have produced many highly qualified data scientists and Ph.D. graduates who have gone on to work for top companies like IBM, Amazon Web Services, and Google. As a highly respected and accomplished computer scientist, I have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the industry, and I am confident that my expertise, leadership, and vision make me a highly qualified computer scientist.
