show more »Dr Eshamsul Sulaiman is an Associate Professor at the Department of Restorative Dentistry, University of Malaya. He graduated with BDS from the Queen’s University of Belfast, United Kingdom in 1997 and obtained his specialist training in Prosthodontics with Distinction from the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, United Kingdom in 2004. His early training was in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff, United Kingdom from 1997 to 2001. He obtained the Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry (MFD) from the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland in 2000. Dr Eshamsul has more than 20 years’ experience in oral implantology and has been actively involved in the teaching of postgraduates in Oral Implantology since 2005. Dr Eshamsul has performed a variety of complex implant procedures involving guided bone regeneration (GBR), connective tissue grafting, sinus floor elevation, alveolar ridge preservation & augmentation, immediate implant placement in the aesthetic zone, partial extraction (root membrane) technique as well as managing mechanical complications post implant placement. He also incorporates computer-guided implant planning and placement in the management of his implant cases. Dr Eshamsul is also the coordinator and director of the University of Malaya Certificate of Oral Implantology course, speaker and instructor at many implant courses & workshops in Malaysia. Dr Eshamsul has given many lectures both within and outside Malaysia. He was an invited speaker at the Asian Academy of Prosthodontics Biennial Conference (2021), Indonesia College of Prosthodontics webinar, Malaysia Oral Implant Association webinar, International Joint Pakistan Prosthodontic Association-Pakistan Association of Orthodontics Conference, Pakistan (2018, 2023), Malaysia International Dental Show (MIDS, 2023), 8th Malaysian Society of Periodontology (MSP) Biennial Scientific Conference (2023), VNU Dental Exhibition and Congress, Vietnam (2023), 31st Malaysian Dental Association Scientific Conference & Trade Exhibition (2024), 3rd Medan International Prosthodontic Scientific Meeting, Indonesia (2024). He is an active member of MegaGen International Network of Education and Clinical Research (MINEC) and was appointed as MINEC Honoured member in 2020 and a key opinion leader (KOL) for MegaGen implant system. Dr Eshamsul is also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England Restorative Specialty Membership & MJDF Examinations. Dr Eshamsul was one of the winners at the final round MegaMind Clinical Case Competition in conjunction with 15th MegaGen International Symposium 2022 held in Seoul and the finalist at the MegaMind Clinical Case Competition in 2023 in Antalya, Turkiye. He is currently the Head of Oral Implantology Unit at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya.
show more »Nurulaini Abu Shamsi is a senior lecturer at the Department of Science and Technology Studies. She received her BSc in Biotechnology & Health Science at the University of Adelaide, Australia and her MSc in Science and Technology Studies at the Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Having a deep interest in media and health communication, Nurulaini pursued her PhD in health communication at the School of Population Health, The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her thesis focuses on understanding the media's role in disseminating non-communicable disease information in a developing country, Malaysia. As Nurulaini received training in both natural science and social science, she sees the needs and opportunities to bridge these two fields. To date, she has expanded her research on science communication and public engagement in science. She actively participates in national and international research activities in science communication. She is currently part of the Trust in Science and Science-Related Populism (TISP Project), a form of Many Lab Study that aims to analyze the factors that affect trust in science, as well as the prevalence and predictors of science-related populist attitudes across countries. This project is led by Dr. Viktoria Cologna (Harvard University) and Dr. Niels G. Mede (University of Zurich). She is also part of the Research Collaboration for Young Lecturers, UM-Universitas Diponegoro, where she leads one of the projects on social media and mental health among universities student in Malaysia and Indonesia. Nurulaini is also a member of the Public Communication of Science and Technology Network, an important international network in the realm of science communication research field. At the local level, she is part of the SEMARAK member, a voluntary movement in nurturing science communication activities in the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. Her supervision and teaching mainly encompass research in health communication, science communication and public engagement. These include the analysis of media representation and audience reception of health and science issues, the role of social media in science and health communication, the perception of scientists on science communication, and the engagement of stakeholders in the sustainability issues in agriculture. Nurulaini has coordinated the Bachelor of Science in Science and Technology Studies undergraduate programme for two years. She is now the coordinator of the Master of Science Communication and Public Engagement, a new programme by the Department of Science and Technology Studies. She significantly contributed to the development of this programme from the beginning. She aims to make UM the landmark of science communication research and activities in the region.
