ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. SARINDER KAUR A/P KASHMIR SINGH

  Dr Sarinder was awarded a Bachelor of Computer Science in 2000 and a Master in Computer Science in 2002 from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University Malaya (UM). She then completed her Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya in 2007. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the same department. Dr. Sarinder has been very active in teaching, supervision, publication, research, and administration. She has taught courses such as Introduction to Database Systems, Advanced Database and Big Data, Programming in Bioinformatics, Data Analytics in Biology, Algorithms and Tools in Bioinformatics, and Computing at Master and undergraduate levels. She is also the Principal Investigator of the Data Science & Bioinformatics Laboratory at UM which has a team of both local and international collaborators from the University Malaya Medical Centre, UM Cancer Institute, Monash University Malaya, University of Cambridge, and the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Sarinder’s main research interest is managing, representing, and analyzing scientific data using computational tools and techniques. Her contribution towards these projects is mostly in building digital systems using visual analytics, databases, and data science techniques. Currently, she is engaged in a project on Electronic Medical Records (EMR) at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), mainly in building the Breast Cancer Digital Ecosystem using scientifically driven clinical informatics solutions for efficient clinical workflow. Dr Sarinder is also working with genome scientists from the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan to develop a framework for finding novel therapeutics for metastatic cancer using bioinformatics tools and algorithms.  Dr Sarinder is on the Editorial Board of BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Medical Informatics, and Decision Making and an Associate Editor of the Malaysian Journal of Science (MJS). She was also the chair of the International Symposium on Biomedical Data Infrastructure 2013 and 4th Data Analytics in Biomedicine Workshop (DAB 2013) organized by IEEE. Dr Sarinder was also a Visiting Scholar at the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, UK, and a Visiting Professor and External Examiner for the Bachelor of Bioinformatics (Hons) Program at Management and Science University (MSU), Malaysia. She is on the MQA Panel of Assessors for Multimedia University and International Medical University Malaysia.  Dr Sarinder is an exco-member of Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network and an auditor for the Malaysian Society of Bioinformatics. DR. HAIRUL HAFIZI BIN HASNAN

Dr. Hairul Hasnan is a distinguished educator and accomplished music professional, holding a doctorate degree in Music and a master's degree in Music Production from the University of York, a prestigious institution in the UK. His academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Physics with Electronics, before he pursued his passion for music with a subsequent Bachelor's degree in Music. With a diverse background, Dr. Hasnan embarked on a rich career path, starting as a full-time musician at Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Malaysia's national broadcasting station. During his tenure, he actively participated in numerous recording sessions in studios and delivered captivating live performances with the RTM combo. As a seasoned music producer, Dr. Hasnan boasts an impressive portfolio of studio recordings, including the recent release of a 10-song album for Reening Lau, generously funded by Cendana (Cultural Economy Development Agency, Malaysia). He has also lent his production expertise to the debut EP of TitikDinginDamai titled "Belumkata", both of which are available for streaming on various digital platforms. His proficiency lies in pop and rock music, with a specialization in drums for both recording and live performances. Presently, Dr. Hasnan is deeply involved in the Malaysian indie scene, nurturing emerging talents such as We Are Avalanche and Laras dari Rasian. Beyond his creative endeavors, Dr. Hasnan actively engages in professional development initiatives. He has conducted numerous music production workshops, including sessions at Lembaga Kebudayaan Sabah, Radio Televisyen Malaysia, and several private companies. Additionally, he serves as the Secretary for the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Malaysia. Dr. Hasnan's contributions extend to scholarly pursuits as well. He authored the first Malay-language book on music production, titled "Asas Rakaman dan Produksi Muzik", a pioneering work in the field. Furthermore, his research on Nonlinear Mixing Systems, conducted during his tenure at the University of York, was presented at prestigious events such as the AES Convention 2019 in Dublin and the Art of Recording Conference at Berklee College of Music. Currently, Dr. Hasnan serves as a Senior Lecturer, imparting his expertise in audio engineering and music production at the esteemed University Malaya.

EMERITUS PROF. DR. AZIRAH BINTI HASHIM

Azirah Hashim is Professor Emeritus in the English Language Department, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. She has held several leadership positions including Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute (2015-2020), Director of the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism (2015-2018), Dean of the Humanities Research Cluster (2010-2015), Chairperson of the Research Ethics Committee (2013-2015) and Dean and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya (2003-2009, 1996-2002). Currently, she is a member of the steering group for the ASEAN Higher Education Community of Practice, RIHED-SHARE and a member of the Standing Working Group of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Education representing the Asia-Europe Institute. Her research interests include English in multilingual contexts, internationalisation of higher education in ASEAN and Academic and Professional Discourse. Publications include English in Southeast Asia and ASEAN: Transformation of Language Habitats, Routledge co-authored with Gerhard Leitner (2021),  Communicating with Asia: the Future of English as a Global Language , Cambridge University Press edited with Gerhard Leitner and Hans-Georg Wolf (2016, 2019) and articles in journals such as English Today, Discourse Studies and Multilingua. She was President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA - https://aila.info/) from 2021 to 2024 and is Founding President of the Malaysian Association of Applied Linguistics. In addition, she is an honorary life member and in the executive committee of the Asia Pacific Languages for Specific Purposes and Professional Communication Association and is a former executive committee member of the International Association of Forensic Linguists. She was on the MyExpert committee at the Ministry of Higher Education involved in capacity building in higher education projects in Cambodia and Laos and was project leader of an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education 'Building research capacity in Malaysia and Laos' (2017-2021).  She also headed the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence: ASEAN and the EU in Dialogue (2017-2021).  In 2009, she was awarded the Georg Forster Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany for a research stay at Free University Berlin and is a Fellow of the Foundation. In 2020, she was a recipient of the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute Research Fellowship, Trinity College Dublin and in 2021, recipient of the Humboldt Fellowship for a renewed stay at FRIAS, University of Freiburg, Germany. She was also FRIAS Senior Fellow and Marie Curie Fellow of the European Union at University of Freiburg, Germany in 2022. She is Humboldt Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/) from 2021 to 2027 and ASEAN Higher Education Expert in the EU SHARE programme on higher education in the ASEAN region from 2021 to 2022. Azirah is on the editorial and advisory board of English Today, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, World Englishes, Journal of Sociolinguistic Studies, GEMA Journal of Language Studies, Journal of Intercultural Communication, Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics,  Asian Journal of English Language Studies and AEI Insights: an international journal on Asia-Europe relations. Also, she is a reviewer for several journals, external examiner and assessor for several universities and on the editorial board of the Asia TEFL book series. On 29 April 2023, Azirah was awarded Honorary Membership of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines for distinguished contribution to linguistics and language research. She was also elected Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in April 2023.
