Marzelan Salleh has lived in Malaysia and UK. His music such as Bani Jawi, Bangkit, Puteri Gunung Ledang, Rukun, Hijrah, and Tarian Cinta have been inspired by Asian nuance and Western European music combined with transcultural contemporary ideas. His music has been performed in United Kingdom and Malaysia alongside composers such as John Pickard, Michael Ellison, and Dieter Mack. Performances of his compositions at major international music festivals and concerts include New Music in the South West, Bristol New Music Festival, Contemporary Music Venture Concert Series and University of Bristol’s New Music Ensemble Concerts. Marzelan Salleh has worked and collaborated with prestigious music ensembles and musicians namely, Quatuor Bozzini, the Brodowski Quartet, New Music Ensemble Bristol, and Manos Charalabopoulos, to name a few. Marzelan Salleh has attended composition workshops and masterclasses by renowned composers and musicians such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, John Pickard, Trevor Wishart, Philip Glass, and Nigel Clarke. Marzelan Salleh received his PhD in Composition from the University of Bristol under the supervision of Dr. Michael Ellison, and previously did his Masters in Composition at the University of Salford with Prof. Alan Williams. Marzelan Salleh’s first involvement in music began as a saxophonist in St. John Institution Kuala Lumpur’s marching band. After which he enrolled into Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia, where he studied clarinet and obtained a first class degree. Composing music has always been his main interest, which led him to obtain a scholarship to pursue contemporary music composition in the UK.
show more »Born in Muar, Johor, Dr. Shafa is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Coordinator of Malay Studies at Academy of Malay Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. She is a Guest Researcher affiliated with Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University, Netherlands. Dr. Shafa was a Fellow at Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) for 2 years (2022-2023). Dr. Shafa experienced as Assistant Fellow (2006-2007) and College Fellow/Secretary (2008-2013) at Kolej Kediaman Tun Syed Zahiruddin (Ninth Residential College). In 2013-2019, Dr. Shafa lived in Leiden, Netherlands to continue her doctorate studies. Starting in January 2024 until present, Dr. Shafa serves as College Fellow/Treasurer at the same residential college. Dr. Shafa obtained her Doctoral Degree from Leiden University, Netherlands on a thesis titled "Malay Singing in Pahang Villages: Identity and Practice" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Bernard Arps (promotor) and Dr. Suryadi (co-promotor) from Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University, Netherlands. Dr. Shafa earned her Master of Malay Studies in Performing Arts and Bachelor of Science in Biohealth (Honors), both from Universiti Malaya. Dr. Shafa specialises in heritage/traditional music, Southeast Asia music history, alternative culture (including punk rock), arts community, popular media and music care. Currently, she is working on a project - music care for caregivers - with her team members from Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Creative Arts and Faculty of Education. This project is under IIRG grant (2022-2025). As an ethnographer whose research sites exist between the online and offline in hybrid fields, Dr. Shafa's interdisciplinary music and/or expressive culture research moves with performers, industry professionals and audiences. In 2023, Dr. Shafa published her book titled "Malay Singing in Pahang Villages: Identity and Practice" (Publisher: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka). In 2016, Dr. Shafa with Associate Professor Dr. Salinah Ja'afar, Associate Professor Dr. Tengku Intan Marlina Tengku Mohd Ali and Datuk Dr. Zurinah Hassan (Malaysian National Laureate) published a book titled "Wacana Pantun Melayu" (Publisher: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka). In 2024, Dr. Shafa received Darjah Paduka Mahkota Perak (P.M.P.) in conjunction with Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah's 68th birthday. Dr. Shafa was awarded Anugerah Penggiat Seni (Seni Berbahasa) Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur in 2023, Anugerah Biduan Syair ASEAN in 2022 and Anugerah Bitara Syair Nusantara in 2021. Also, Dr. Shafa was awarded Skim Latihan Akademik Fellowships (2008-2011 & 2013-2016) from Universiti Malaya. show more »Dr. Mazlina Mazlan is a Professor and Head of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Universiti Malaya. She has significantly advanced the field, particularly in brain injury and neurorehabilitation. Her expertise spans traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. Prof. Mazlina's TBI research has been widely published in medical journals, and she serves as Associate Editor for Neurology Asia (WoS) and Journal of Health and Translational Medicine (Scopus). She has co-authored numerous chapters and books, including a contribution to the globally recognized textbook Braddom's Rehabilitation Care. Her influence extends to keynote addresses at international conferences including the World Congress of the International Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine and invited clinical workshops in Southeast Asia. Additionally, she founded and leads the Malaysian Association of Rehabilitation Physicians' Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Special Interest Groups, focusing on clinical training, education, and public awareness. Prof. Mazlina has supervised over 50 postgraduates, including the first PhD graduate from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Universiti Malaya. Her leadership extends to chairing the National Conjoint Board for Rehabilitation Medicine Specialty and serving as a Medical Specialty Program Panel Evaluator for the Malaysian Medical Council. She is also part of the World Health Organisation's expert review group for Rehabilitation Intervention toolkit. Beyond academia, Prof. Mazlina frequently serves as an expert medical witness in medico-legal TBI cases. Clinically, she is a pioneer, being the first Malaysian rehabilitation physician with a Research & Clinical Fellowship in brain injury rehabilitation and the first Malaysian appointed to the Asian Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Society SIG Council. She provides expert clinical consultations and treatments, as a Consultant Rehabilitation Physician at UM Medical Center & UM Specialist Center.
