Professor Dr Azlina Amir Abbas is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in adult reconstruction, with particular expertise in hip and knee arthroplasty, including complex primary and revision joint replacement surgery and the management of prosthetic joint infection.
She obtained her undergraduate medical degree (MD) from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, and completed her Master of Orthopaedic Surgery at Universiti Malaya. She subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in adult reconstruction at Universiti Malaya and Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital, South Korea, gaining further experience in complex arthroplasty and revision surgery.
Professor Dr Azlina is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including specialist and subspecialty training in orthopaedic surgery. She has contributed to curriculum development, accreditation-related activities, and the implementation of competency-based surgical training, particularly in the field of arthroplasty.
In addition to her academic and clinical roles, she holds a key administrative appointment as Deputy Dean (Development and Infrastructure), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. Her responsibilities include oversight of faculty development and infrastructure planning, facilities and asset management, ICT-related coordination, and engagement with internal and external stakeholders to support the Faculty’s academic, clinical, and research missions.
Her research interests include clinical outcomes in hip and knee arthroplasty, prosthetic joint infection, revision joint replacement surgery, and quality improvement in orthopaedic care. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents at national and international scientific meetings.
