Biography | |
Dr. Lim Po Teen began his academic career at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 2000 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer (2008) and Associate Professor (2013). He joined the University of Malaya in January 2014 to lead the newly established Bachok Marine Research Station at the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, UM.
Teaching and Supervision
In 20 years of his academic career, Po Teen was responsible for teaching and course development at undergraduate to postgraduate levels. More than 60 final-year project (FYP) students, 28 MSc students, and nine (9) Ph.D. candidates have completed their studies under his supervision. Currently, he is supervising 8 MSc students and 2 Ph.D. candidates.
Research and Development
As the leading researcher in Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) research in Malaysia, he has contributed to the R&D of HABs in the country. He has published more than 170 papers, including 101 ISI papers from research undertaken through national and international research collaborations. He has delivered >150 presentations at national and international conferences, with an H-index of 27 (Web of Science), and >2100 total citations. To date, he has secured and completed over 20 research projects funded by national and international agencies worth more than MYR 5m.
National and International Recognition, Leadership
Currently, he is the Vice-chair of UNESCO IOC SCOR GLOBALHAB Program (2016-2019, 2020-2023), Co-chair of the UNESCO-IOC WESTPAC Harmful Algal Blooms (WESTPAC-HABs) programs (2010-Present); Vice President of the International Society for the Study of Harmful Algae (ISSHA) (2018-present), Assoc. Editor of the ISI Q1 journal Harmful Algae (2018-Present), National group leader of JSPS research and education network, steering committee of IOC WESTPAC Toxic Marine Organism (WESTPAC-TMO) (2010-Present), and international advisory committee member of Xiamen University Dongshan Swire Marine Station. He was also a Senior Visiting Fellow of the State Key Lab in Marine Environmental Sciences (2018-2019, 2020-2021), Xiamen University, and an adjunct professor of USM (2021-2023). He is currently an adjunct associate professor at the University of Tokyo (2019-present). He is also the expert panel of the National Technical Working Group of Biotoxins and HABs, Task Force of Import/Export Seafood Product and Safety DOF Kelantan.
Consultancy
Po Teen is a registered consultant under the Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) and a registered subject specialist under the Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE). He is actively involved in consultancy projects whenever his expertise in marine science is needed. He also served as a council member of the Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences (MSMS).
