Biography | |
Dr.Usharani Balasingam, Associate Professor, Faculty of Law University of Malaya, Malaysia. She has postgraduate qualifications in law and education. She had an extensive and long career path of about 12 years as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in commercial and civil areas and in corporate legal advisory in Kuala Lumpur City Centre Bhd before joining the academia. She has facilitated learning for corporate governance, company, trust and equity, malaysian legal system, research methods and legal aspects in education at UM. She has also taught commercial law, tort, English land law, arbitration and construction law prior to joining UM at private universities. She joined UM with the added task and successfully completed the Master in Competition Law and Policy (though not offered currently) for the law faculty. She has co-authored a book on Company Law and co-edited book on elder protection and country chapter in public international law. She has been an externally fully sponsored keynote speaker and an invited speaker at international conferences in India, Philippines and Tunisia (Harvard co-organised). She has also presented at MOE conferences and other national and international conferences on diverse areas of education, ethics, contract, medical, trust, corporate and elder. She was also an invited facilitator for corporate governance at INTAN. In course of her presentations, she has received best presenter and third best virtual presenter at conferences. She had also received an invite from Head of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) to establish a unit. She has been involved with the UM Student Election Council as an Appeal Panel Member. She has also rendered legal advice and services with a team in drafting legal documents and processes for UM. She is an University Malaya Auditor. She has been involved with Student activities (eg from ALSA and Constitution Literacy) due to student invites as a student advisor, judge, panelist, speaker or presenter on diverse areas as and when to support student activities. This included a Community Awareness week on Mental Health and a Constitutional Moot on basic structure doctrine. She has published extensively on the diverse areas as articles and book chapters (trust, contract, tort, company, education and upcoming constitution and legal methods). The selected three titles articles (intentionally chosen those where she has published solely) are given below to reflect the diversity.
She sits as an editorial board member on three international journals. She has got an external award for excellent reviewer. She was an external examiner on the Board of Studies for two Masters in Law and in Master in Corporate Law Programme(s) for a local university college. She was a past recipient of UM excellent service award. She is a fellow member with International Society of Development and Sustainability Japan. She has had ties to the industry and professional bodies like Malaysian Institute of Accountant (MIA), Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAISCA) and Companies Commission Malaysia (CCM). She has completed three research grants and is currently a co researcher with an ongoing multidisciplinary grant with UM medical faculty. She has completed a private consultancy with UPUM for a private entity. She has supervised Phd student and Masters students who have completed their degrees. There are more ongoing supervision. She is a fully external sponsored trained and certified by the Centre for International Law (CIL) NUS ASEAN Law Academy Educator Programme where she received for the faculty 13 donated books for the same. Other fully external sponsored training and conferences includes NUS Conference on ASEAN (Singapore), Human Rights by SHAPESEA (Thailand) and Geneva Academy and Norwegian Centre (Norway) on United Nations Human Rights Mechanism.
