Dr Surina Zaman Huri is a Geriatric Psychiatrist and Medical Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2002 and later completed her Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2012. She subsequently undertook a Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry (2020–2024) with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, which included overseas training at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. Her clinical practice focuses on the assessment and management of mental health conditions in older adults, including dementia, late-life depression, anxiety disorders, insomnia, and other geriatric psychiatric conditions. She has particular expertise in dementia care, with an emphasis on the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the optimisation of quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. Her research interests include sleep disorders in older adults and dementia, with a particular focus on the interaction between sleep disturbances, cognitive decline, and behavioural and psychological symptoms, as well as their impact on cognitive and emotional health in later life. She also has a strong interest in understanding and addressing caregiver burden through the identification of caregivers’ needs and the development of supportive strategies to enhance well-being within the caregiving relationship. |
