DR. CATHERINE THAMARAI A/P ARUMUGAM

Dr Catherine Thamarai Arumugam is currently attached to the Family Health Discipline, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya as a Medical Lecturer with a specialisation in Public Health Medicine. Her past publications speaks of her interest in the research on early childhood development, infectious diseases and her love for poetries. In an unwavering effort of creating a safe media environment for thriving children - she is interested to further explore on the dynamics of technology, toddlers and family relationships.  A medical degree holder from Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia - her journey as a junior doctor started at the Sungai Buloh Hospital which is also the national referral centre for infectious disease. Upon completion of housemanship training, she went on to serve as a Medical Officer in Charge of a maternal child health clinic in the district of Temerloh, Pahang. The responsibility entrusted granted her invaluable experience especially in the domains of maternal child health and disaster preparedness – stirring the passion towards public health. Dr Catherine went back to Temerloh District Health Office with a Doctorate in Public Health from Universiti Malaya - serving as an Epidemiology Officer, heading the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Unit during the COVID19 rampage. Her major tasks revolved around surveillance, outbreak response, training activities and playing the role of liaison officer for the state-level CDC department. From Ministry of Health to Ministry of Higher Education – Dr Catherine has now started her new venture as a medical lecturer, striving to be an advocate for public health issues she is passionate about through her research works and creative writings!

DR. CHONG WU LING

Dr. Chong Wu Ling is a senior lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Her areas of expertise include ethnic Chinese studies and Southeast Asian politics. She is the author of Chinese Indonesians in post-Suharto Indonesia: Democratisation and ethnic minorities (Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, 2018). The book explores the role of ethnic Chinese Indonesians in shaping the democratisation process as well as their position in post-Suharto Indonesia across business, politics and civil society. She is also the co-author of Kaedah penyelidikan dan panduan penulisan [Research methods and guidance for writing, in Malay] (Kuala Lumpur: Universiti Malaya Press, 2016) (with Professor Dr. Sivachandralingam Sundara Raja and Dr. Noraini Mohamed Hassan). Wu Ling has published articles and book reviews in Asian Ethnicity, Pacific Affairs, Southeast Asian Studies, Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (JSEAS), JATI—Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Sejarah, Sarjana, Borneo Research Journal (BRJ), Jebat: Malaysian Journal of History, Politics & Strategic Studies, Journal of Chinese Overseas, and International Journal of China Studies.

DR. HEMA A/P SUBRAMANIAM

Hema Subramaniam is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Software Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology at Universiti Malaya. She earned her PhD in Software Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2016, following a Master of Computer Science (Software Engineering) from Universiti Selangor in 2010 and a BSc in Information Technology from the same institution in 2006. Her research focuses on software architecture and quality measurement, emphasising software metrics and real-time systems. She has recently expanded her work into mental health and environmental analytics. She explores the anxiety prediction via slang analysis on social media platforms. She investigates how system architecture can support real-time processing and sentiment analysis using natural language processing (NLP) models tailored to regional slang, contributing to mood detection systems for early anxiety prediction. Additionally, she has worked on embedded software solutions for learning disabilities (LD) supported by a grant. Hema has published both software engineering and mental health analytics, with ongoing projects in slang-based mood detection, and social media-driven anxiety prediction. Currently, she supervises a group of Master’s students working on system architectures for scalable, real-time mood and anxiety detection applications under her guidance.
