DR. JUNAID OLAWALE QUAZIM

Dr. Junaid Olawale Quazim is a senior lecturer at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He obtained his PhD in Medical Parasitology from the Universiti Malaya (UM) in 2018. Prior to this, he did his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nigeria before he joined academics, at Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria, as a Lecturer in 2012. He got scholarship from the Nigerian Government for his PhD programme in 2014. Hence, he went back to Nigeria after his PhD to continue his job as a Lecturer until he joined the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya in May, 2023 as a senior lecturer. Dr. Junaid’s work centers on mosquito-borne parasitic diseases (malaria and filariasis), zoonotic filariasis, interactions between the parasites, hosts and vectors, and immunology. Presently, he has an international collaboration with Humboldt Research Hub-Center for Emerging & Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (HRH-CERID) at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso Oyo State, Nigeria, working on ‘Molecular Surveillance for HRP2/3 Gene Deletion in Nigeria’. He has published over 17 articles in various categories of journals.

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. SANTHA A/P CHENAYAH @ RAMU

Santha Chenayah joined the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Administration in 2001 as a lecturer. She completed her PhD in Economics from Graduate School of Economics, Osaka University, Japan in 2007. She is now an Associate Professor. She was the Head of Economics Department at the Faculty of Economic and Administration from 2019 to 2021. She has 22 years of experience in teaching and 17 of experience in research in the field of macroeconomics, operations research and environmental economics. Her dedication and work excellence has earned her the recognition of the University and she has been awarded the Excellent Service Award in 2016 and 2020 and Excellence Service Certificate in 2003 and 2004.  Her article entitled 'Annotated methodological review of Lean Six Sigma' published in International Journal of Lean Six Sigma has been selected by the editorial team as an Outstanding Paper in the 2019 Emerald Literati Awards. Santha Chenayah is a consummate researcher and prolific writer.  Her numerous works have seen print in both local and international journals.  Some of her publications are in journals indexed in ISI such as the Environmental Science and Policy, Environmental Science & Pollution Research, Scientia Agricola, The Singapore Economic Review, Asia Pacific Business Review and Cybernetics and Systems. Her research involvement also includes several projects funded by the University such as the High Impact Research (HIR) grant, IIRG grant, UMRG grants, government funded FRGS and TRGS grants and International Agencies, such as Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) under Ministry of Environment, Japan. Her works on environmental issues, which span a large coverage – 3R, recycling solid waste, climate change-, put her in a relatively better position than her contemporaries with the same interests. Santha Chenayah also sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Institutions and Economies (University of Malaya).  In relation to this, she is engaged frequently as an ad-hoc reviewer for journal submissions, some of which include reputable journals such as the waste Management Research (WMR), Asia Pacific Business Review (APBR) and many others. Further to her academic pursuits, Santha Chenayah has been a good team player in giving her full cooperation to organize and participate in the activities of the Faculty.  She has been involved in several organizing committees for workshops and seminars held by the Faculty.   She has supervised to completion 11 students at PhD and 30 Students at Masters level for their research paper and many final year undergraduates for their Graduation Exercise.

PROF. DR. CHUA KEK HENG

Professor Dr. Chua Kek Heng is an accomplished senior professor and Head of the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Malaya. His research expertise spans a broad range of topics including disease polymorphism, mutation investigation, bacterial virulence factor characterization, and diagnostic kit development. Professor Chua's commitment and hard work have led to over 200 original publications, making significant contributions to science and technology. His research has not only led to novel scientific innovations but has also improved our understanding of human disease and its associations with genetic factors and microorganisms. As a mentor and educator, Professor Chua is dedicated to training and preparing his younger staff, colleagues, and students to excel in biological research, building the next generation of scientific leaders. One of Professor Chua's significant achievements is his contribution to the study of genotyping of diseases, which has resulted in the successful mapping of important disease-predisposing markers for systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease, and retinopathy in the Malaysian population. These findings have helped predict disease development and allow for early preventive measures. His research has also led to the development of innovative approaches, tests, and kits that allow for more cost-effective, rapid, sensitive, and specific detection and confirmation of human diseases and microbial infections. Professor Chua's efforts have been recognized at the national and international levels, with over 1500 intellectual properties, including national and international patents, trademarks, and copyrights. One of his most successful inventions is the PlasmoNex diagnostic kit for malaria, which was developed in 2011. This kit is the world's first PCR-based malaria detection system that can detect all five different species of Plasmodium (malaria parasites) in a single test. In addition to his research accomplishments, Professor Chua is also an active member of several national committees and panels, evaluating numerous grants and projects, and organizing national and international workshops to train young Malaysian researchers in molecular "bench" skills. He has delivered over a hundred presentations at various seminars, expositions, and conferences and has acted as a reviewer for many ISI (WOS) publications and international grants in his field. Professor Chua has represented the University of Malaya in numerous national and international exhibitions and competitions, receiving over 100 prestigious national and international awards, including the MTSF Science and Technology Award 2022, Biotechnology Asia Award 2005, Best Invention in Biotechnology Award 2006, USA INPEX Grand Prix Award 2008, National Intellectual Property Award 2013, World Halal Excellent Innovation Award 2013, and Top Research Scientist Malaysia 2017. He has also received recognition for his contributions to academic service and teaching, including the Excellent Lecturer Award in 2014 and Best Lecturer for Biomedical Science Teaching 2017. Overall, Professor Chua's tireless dedication to scientific research, mentorship, and innovation has resulted in significant advancements in disease detection and prevention, making him an outstanding scientist and an inspiration to the scientific community.
