Dr. Junaid Olawale Quazim is a senior lecturer at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He obtained his PhD in Medical Parasitology from the Universiti Malaya (UM) in 2018. Prior to this, he did his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nigeria before he joined academics, at Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria, as a Lecturer in 2012. He got scholarship from the Nigerian Government for his PhD programme in 2014. Hence, he went back to Nigeria after his PhD to continue his job as a Lecturer until he joined the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya in May, 2023 as a senior lecturer. Dr. Junaid’s work centers on mosquito-borne parasitic diseases (malaria and filariasis), zoonotic filariasis, interactions between the parasites, hosts and vectors, and immunology. Presently, he has an international collaboration with Humboldt Research Hub-Center for Emerging & Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (HRH-CERID) at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso Oyo State, Nigeria, working on ‘Molecular Surveillance for HRP2/3 Gene Deletion in Nigeria’. show more »Finding patterns of variation in biology fascinating, I chose to study genetics and molecular biology in Universiti Malaya, graduating in 2002 with first class honours. Subsequently, I turned to the roots of the study of patterns of variation - statistics, receiving my MSc in statistics from Universiti Malaya in 2005. I completed my PhD in statistics at the National University of Singapore in 2009. Since 2010, I have been with Universiti Malaya. Currently, I am an associate professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, UK. My research interest broadly covers the area of data science, machine learning, bioinformatics, ecology, and medical statistics. Since 2010, I have worked in over 20 projects as the principal consultant statistician, and conducted numerous workshops on statistics, bioinformatics, and R programming. Presently, I head the UM Centre for Data Analytics, which focuses on establishing collaborative research and engagement between the industry and the academia in Malaysia. I enjoy reading, travelling, nature walks, and more recently, engaging fellow scientists in Twitter space.
show more »Professor Dr. Ernest Poh Mau Ern is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He is also Consultant Respiratory Physician at both University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and University Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC). Formerly a graduate of University of Malaya, he has worked both locally and abroad in the United Kingdom being trained in areas of respiratory, critical care, transplant and sleep medicine. He is highly skillful in pleural ultrasound, bronchoscopy and pleuroscopy. Prior to his return to Malaysia, he was awarded the Specialty Certificate in Respiratory Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and British Thoracic Society (BTS). Professor Dr. Ernest Poh is a top ranked academic in the country. He was awarded the prestigious "Best Lecturer Award" by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in 2018. He is well respected and liked by peers and his students. Aside from treating a variety of respiratory and sleep conditions, Dr. Poh is recognized as an expert in lung cancer, which remains an interest close to his heart. He is an active researcher in many international clinical research trials treating lung cancer, COPD and bronchiectasis. Recognized as a global expert in respiratory medicine, he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, FRCP (London, UK) and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, FCCP (USA). He is also affiliated to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR), Malaysian Thoracic Society (MTS), Academy of Medicine Malaysia (AM), American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and Royal College of Physicians (RCP, UK). As a doctor, he is known to be kind, compassionate and loving and is very popular amongst his patients.
