Associate Professor Dr. Md. Imtiaz Uddin is an expert agricultural biotechnologist and crop breeder at the Galmi Lemi Biotechnology Research Centre, Universiti Malaya (UM). He specializes in mutation breeding, advanced gene cloning, plant functional genomics, and molecular stress physiology. Dr. Uddin holds a Ph.D. in Bio-environment Science (2008) from Tottori University, Japan, alongside an M.S. and B.Sc. (Hons) from Bangladesh Agricultural University. Following his doctoral graduation, he was awarded a prestigious Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2008–2010), which he completed at Tottori University. He later expanded his regional research footprint as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2013–2014) at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Uddin rose through the scientific ranks at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), serving as Scientific Officer (1994–2009), Senior Scientific Officer (2009–2015), Principal Scientific Officer (2015–2019; Associate Professor), and ultimately as Chief Scientific Officer and Head of the Biotechnology Division (2019–2024; Professor). Parallel to his senior leadership roles, he maintained an active academic profile, directing advanced graduate research labs and driving institutional academic excellence. His career is marked by milestone contributions to global food security, including the innovation and commercial release of 13 elite climate-resilient crop varieties (05 Rice, 03 Soybean, 02 Sesame, and 03 Tomato).

Dr. Uddin's research bridges fundamental molecular mechanisms with applied field agriculture, focusing on tissue-specific sodium homeostasis and stress-induced genes (OsARP, OsMGD) to combat salinity, drought, and submergence. At Universiti Malaya, he is translating this deep expertise into high-value intellectual property, focusing on patenting innovative, climate-smart crop varieties optimized for sustainable agriculture. He is a prolific academic researcher with over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles—including top-tier publications in Plant Physiology and Plants—and has successfully driven postgraduate research supervision as the primary mentor for 24 graduate students (06 PhD and 18 MS).
