Dr Nurul Ashikin Mastura Binti Muhammed Rezuan graduated from Universiti Malaya in 2019 and subsequently served in the Malaysian government dental service before commencing specialist training in Periodontology in 2022. She completed her specialist training through the Master of Clinical Dentistry programme at University College London, obtained Membership in Periodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and achieved the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Periodontology, Periodontics and Implant Dentistry accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology.
She is currently a Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology, with active roles in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical supervision, and research development. Her research interests encompass periodontal health and disease patterns, oral health in sport, tooth longevity and prevention of tooth loss, periodontal regeneration, and emerging digital approaches in regenerative dentistry.
Her master’s research investigated the oral health burden among Olympic and Paralympic athletes using clinical data from the London 2012 Games, with particular emphasis on oral disease patterns and factors relevant to long term oral health. This work has been presented at local and international scientific meetings, including the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research General Session in Barcelona. She was shortlisted for the British Society for Oral and Dental Research Senior Colgate Prize session and the UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences Dean’s Research Award. She subsequently received the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine Association Prize for Sport and Exercise Medicine for an oral presentation of her comparative study on the oral health status of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Her clinical and academic interests centre on long term tooth retention, periodontal and mucogingival surgery, regenerative periodontal therapy, and implant dentistry. Her developing research programme brings together clinical periodontology, population based investigation of disease patterns, advanced imaging, and digital innovation, with an overarching focus on understanding determinants of oral health, extending tooth longevity, and advancing more precise and personalised approaches to periodontal care.
