BIOGRAPHY
Norida Abu Bakar is a Senior Librarian at the Universiti Malaya (UM) Library since 2008 and appointed to lead the Technology Management Section starting from 2017 until now. Norida holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and a Master's degree in Library and Information Science. With over 15 years of experience in library management, customer service, and information technology, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing library services and information management.
Throughout her career, Norida has played a key role in the digital transformation of UM's library systems, successfully leading the shift from traditional library services to a comprehensive online platform. This transformation integrated digital resources, e-books, online catalog, and virtual reference services, making the library more accessible and user-friendly. The digital shift has significantly increased patron engagement and expanded the library's reach beyond its physical space.
Norida's expertise spans library management systems, ICT infrastructure, data security, and digital transformation, with a focus on providing innovative, user-centered library services. She also excels in project management, system optimization and technical support. In addition, Norida provides ongoing staff training to enhance library operations and improve the user experience, driving the seamless transition of the library to a fully digital environment.

CREATIVITY/ INNOVATIONS
- Pedestrian Barrier Gate - Face Recognition and Qr Code2025, The pedestrian barrier gate project is currently in the phase of awarding contracts to qualified companies, where the selection of companies that meet the technical and financial requirements is underway. This phase aims to ensure that only experienced companies with the capability to implement the facial recognition and QR code system are chosen, ensuring effective and high-quality execution. With the introduction of facial recognition and QR code systems, this project will enhance security, provide contactless access, and enable real-time monitoring for all visitors and staff. The implementation of this project is expected to improve operations and security, particularly in areas with high visitor traffic. (Process Improvement)
- Identification of Assets Based On Radio Frequency Technology (Rfid) and Also Near Field Communication (Nfc)2025, The project aims to implement a modern asset identification system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies to improve the tracking, management, and security of assets. These technologies will streamline processes in libraries, organizations, warehouses, or any environment that requires real-time asset management. The project will also integrate with mobile self-checkout application to enhance the user experience, reduce human error, and improve operational efficiency. The planning phase for the project has been completed, outlining the necessary steps, timelines, and resources required for successful implementation. A detailed budget has been formulated and approved, ensuring sufficient financial allocation for each phase of the project. This includes procurement of necessary hardware, software and the integration of RFID and NFC systems. (Process Improvement)
- Repository System for The Centralization of The Universiti Malaya Repository2025, Involved in detailed planning, budgeting, market surveys, and risk analysis to proposed a repository system for the centralization of the Universiti Malaya repository and also a platform for the digital museum's development. This centralized system for the UM Library Repository is vital for enhancing the library's operational efficiency, improving resource accessibility, ensuring data security, and supporting long-term digital preservation. It allows the library to better serve its academic community, providing a scalable, user-friendly platform that adapts to evolving technological and educational needs. (Process Improvement)
- Open Source Library Management System - Folio2025, Involved in detailed planning, budgeting, market surveys, and risk analysis to ensure that the transition is successful and meets the long-term goals of the library. The library system is the core or main system that ensures the smooth operation of the library. Starting in 2025, the library will undergo a major change, transitioning from a proprietary system to an open-source system, FOLIO. FOLIO (Future of Libraries Is Open) is an open-source, community-driven integrated library system (ILS) designed to support libraries in managing their resources and services more efficiently. FOLIO is developed by a community of librarians, technologists, and vendors, and it provides a flexible platform for libraries to manage their collections, circulation, acquisitions, and other operational tasks. - Carrel Room Online Booking2024, Enable users to view available rooms and resources in real-time and make reservations directly online. The system allows for flexible booking options, including time slots, recurring bookings, and reservation duration. (Service Innovation)
- Self Checkout Mobile Apps2024, Initiating a project to implement a mobile app for borrowing library books including planning, budgeting, conducting market surveys, and running 3 month trial period. Mobile app that enables library users to borrow books directly through their smartphones, streamlining the borrowing process and improving user experience. It help library to reduce cost by eliminating the need for extra physical equipment that require ongoing maintenance, updates, and repairs. (Service Innovation)
- Authentication System to Access Electronic Resources Subscribed by Library, Integrated With Single Sign On (Sso)2022, Involved in detailed planning, budgeting, market surveys, and risk analysis to identify an authentication system that can fulfill the library's needs. This includes evaluating various technologies that can provide secure, seamless access to library resources while ensuring user convenience. The authentication system is also designed to offer detailed insights into the usage of electronic resources, enabling the library to track access patterns, measure resource usage, and generate reports for data-driven decision-making. . Considerations also included ease of implementation, ongoing support, user training, and integration with other Single Sign On ( SSO) to enhance the user experience while minimizing administrative burdens. - Online Registration for Library Event - Workshops, Webinars and Programs2022, Enables libraries to schedule and promote events such as workshops, webinars, and programs. Includes registration options, event reminders, and calendar views for users to stay updated on upcoming events. (Automation & AI)
- Library Chatbot2022, The project started in early 2022 and implemented in September 2022. The process involved in detailed planning, budgeting, market surveys, and pilot testing. This included planning and designing the user interaction flow to ensure that the chatbot serves its intended purpose efficiently and provides a seamless experience. The UM Library Chatbot is a digital assistant designed to enhance the user experience and streamline library services at Universiti Malaya. Integrated with the online reference service, LiveChat, the chatbot is embedded on the library's website and Library Guides. It is available to assist students, faculty, and other library users in finding information, accessing resources, and receiving support. This project has won "Anugerah Inovasi Harapan" at the Konvensyen Kumpulan Inovatif dan Kreatif Universiti Malaya 2022. (Automation & AI)
- Rebranding UM Library Website2019, The development of the new website for the University of Malaya Library replaces the old website, which had been compromised by hackers. The new design is modern and user-friendly. The project started in June 2019 and online access was launched on December 13, 2019. In 2021, once again, the library website was rebranded using the Universiti Malaya website template to ensure uniformity and represent the image of the Universiti Malaya. - Library News & Updates2018, Design the library’s up-to-date newsletter featuring special events, issues, planned programs, and classes. The newsletter sent out via UM email (Creative & Design Innovation)
- Library Live Chat2018, The Live Chat service was introduced in 2018 and continues to provide online reference services to library users, allowing them to receive reference assistance from librarians without having to be on the library premises. This service, available from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, has been further enhanced by integrating a chatbot, enabling users to access quick, automated assistance outside of regular hours or for frequently asked questions. This service effectively replaces traditional library reference desk services, providing users with more convenient and efficient access to support. - Sms Alert2014, Applying the use of SMS alerts to notify about material claim notices, book reservation pickup notices, and interlibrary loans and supplies. (Process Improvement)
- Library Material Claim Project2014, Implemented in 2014 to reclaim books not returned by active borrowers, graduates, or students who have withdrawn since 2004. This project reduced the number of books not returned. The first year recorded 85% of students and 78% of staff who received claim notices and SMS alerts returning the books. (Process Improvement)
- Daily Cash Report2011, Restructure the library's late fine collection process to be more accurate by introducing the generation of the 'Daily Cash Report.' It helps in the accurate daily calculation of the library's fine collection (Process Improvement)
- Reference Desk Enquiries Database2011, Developing an internal database to record user inquiries at the reference desk. The recorded data can be used to analyze the questions asked by library users. However, the traditional reference services were replaced by LiveChat in 2018 and integrated with Chatbot in 2022 (Process Improvement)
