BIOGRAPHY
Matthew A. Haywood is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Malaya (UM). His research interests focus on music sustainability, affect theory, and identity with a focus on Chinese and Japanese traditional music. He has written most extensively on Cantonese opera across southern China. Originally from the United Kingdom, hehas previously lived in Hong Kong, where he pursued his doctoral studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and in Macau, where he worked as a Lecturer in the Academy of Music at the Macau University of Science and Technology. His research has been published in Ethnomusicology Forum and Asian Music, and he is a Co-Chair of the Applied Ethnomusicology Section of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the incoming President of the Association for Chinese Music Research. He also enjoys playing the violin, piano, erhu, and gaohu.
