BIOGRAPHY


Hanafi Hussin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya.  He holds the MA in Southeast Asian Studies with a research topic "Philippine Political Theatre During Marcos Regime," and he received his Ph.D. in Performing Arts Studies on "Rice Farming Ritual of Kadazan of Sabah" from the Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya.  His main focus of research in the anthropology of Southeast Asia particularly on ritual and performing arts. He actively researches and publishes on ritual and identity of Kadazandusun Penampang and Lotud Dusun community of Tuaran in the state of Sabah.  He also researched ritual and performing arts of the maritime communities of Southeast Asia mainly Bajau and Bajau Laur/Sama Dilaut of the east coast of Borneo and Southern Philippines. He served as Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences from 1st July 2016 until 2nd December 2018, Deputy Dean (Undergraduate Studies), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya from 1st September 2014 until 20th June 2016.  Currently he serves as Head of Maritime Culture and Geopolitics Unit, Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya.
