KL Goh is Professor of Medicine at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He is Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Chief of the Combined GI Endoscopy Unit at the University of Malaya Medical Center. He has served the University since 1980 and became a full Professor at the University in 1998.
He has dedicated his entire academic and professional life to developing the field of gastroenterology, hepatology and digestive sciences in Malaysia and in the whole Asian Pacific region and globally as well. He is widely recognized as an eminent leader in the field internationally and a respected teacher and mentor for many years. He has trained numerous GI fellows from locally as well as from abroad including from Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Mauritius and Morocco.
He runs an annual international endoscopy workshop from 1993 in his GI endoscopy unit. This workshop has received wide international recognition. The work done at the University of Malaya Medical Center Endoscopy unit has received the highest honor of Center of Excellence from the World Endoscopy Organization from 2008-2014 and from 2015-2020.
Professor Goh has published widely in international journals with papers (297 papers and 312 abstracts and 7 book chapters) with a H index of 33 (ISI) particularly in the areas of Helicobacter pylori, gastroesophageal reflux and GI cancers and with a focus on epidemiology of these diseases in the Asian Pacific region. He is editor emeritus of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (JGH) and is editorial board member of several international journals including the Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Helicobacter, Journal Digestive Diseases, Digestive Diseases.
He is currently the President of the Asian Pacific Digestive Week Federation, Chairman of the JGH Foundation, the Immediate Past-President of the Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology and Immediate past Vice President of the World Gastroenterology Organization. Professor Goh is a Past-President of the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, a position he held in 1996/97.
He was awarded the highly prestigious national “Merdeka Award” for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement for “Elevating the Study and Practice of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Malaysia to Global Standards” in 2011. The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) also awarded him their International Service Award for the year 2014. In 2000, he was awarded Datukship from the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah.
