BIOGRAPHY
Foong Chan Choong (or publication name: Chan Choong Foong) is associate professor at the Medical Education and Research Development Unit (MERDU), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. He graduated with a first-class honour bachelor’s degree in science with Education, Universiti Malaya, and at the same institution, he obtained his PhD in the field of science education. He is also a Fellow of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) PSG Regional Institute, India.
He began his academic career at MERDU in 2013, involving the development of the university’s new undergraduate medical curriculum. Now, he manages program evaluation. When the undergraduate medical curriculum was established, he initiated a new curriculum development project. In 2016, he developed a Master of Medical Education with colleagues. The Master of Medical Education commenced in 2018, and he has become the founding program coordinator until now. He is also teaching educational psychology, instructional design, and research methodology for the master’s program.
Foong Chan Choong is also a physics educationist. He likes interacting with school students and teacher trainees, and gains satisfaction and motivation. He is teaching a Postgraduate Diploma of Education at the Faculty of Education.
His expertise and understanding of the development, implementation and improvement of academic programmes have made him being appointed as the Programme Quality Assurance Expert (ProQAE) at the Universiti Malaya. In addition, his innovations in education have won recognitions/medals at university, national, and international levels.
In 2019, he ventured into engineering education. Currently, he conducts multidisciplinary research across the medical and health professions, engineering, and physics education. His research interests include the application of learning theories to practice, self- and peer-assessment, program evaluation, and student underperformance. He is also an associate editor for the Annals of Medicine (Medical Education section) and serves as an editorial board member for international journals.
To return to society, Foong Chan Choong has engaged in school activities. He is the coach for the debate team at his alma mater, a secondary school in the Perak state. The school has won recognition at state, national, and international levels.
