Paint coating is one of the protective methods applied on wood, steel and alloy substrates to against corrosion occurrence. Most of the recent paint coating formulation consists of polymers usually as binders, additives to improve the specific mechanical or chemical characteristics and pigments for the visual appearance. Natural polymers in traditional binders formulation such as shellac, rubber and cellulose used in have been replaced extensively by synthetic polymers (ex. Poly-Acrylic, Poly-Vinyl Ether) since the invention of it in 1907 by Leo Baekel. Polymer synthetic binders are easy to formulate for wide paint coating application. However from end of 90 eras towards new millennium the production cost polymer synthetic binders have increase drastically due to the limited source of raw materials. Recently studies on natural paint coating have been brought to the scientific research level. Two Malaysian physicist materials science researchers Dr. Zul Hazrin and Prof. Dr. Abdul Kariem Arof from University of Malaya have study the potential of natural resources (from plants) for paint coating application. Their research showed the instability of chlorophyll molecules extracted from plant leaf (green dye) compatible mixed with hydrophilic synthetic polymer binders to perform natural green dye coating paint. Their also found Black Dammar (natural resin) as an additive component to improves electrochemical resistance of paint coating film. Currently their study the optical characteristic of flavonoid molecules group to be used as renewable pigment materials paint coating films. Their research involve collaboration from UM Chemistry Department Prof. Dr. Rosiyah and UM Institute Science Biology Prof. Dr. Rosna Mat Taha.
