Dr Yeoh Yin Yin is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya. Her academic training spans Universiti Malaya, Peking University and National Taiwan University. Her research centres on Chinese dialectology and linguistics, language contact, sociolinguistics, Chinese education, and language and culture. She has led national, international, university and privately funded projects on the localisation and phonological development of Southern Min in Peninsular Malaysia, Hakka phonology in Sarawak, the teaching of non-Chinese pupils in Chinese primary schools, and educational innovation. Her publications examine Malaysian Hokkien, the Tianjin speech community in Sabah, Chinese character pedagogy, multilingual education, and Malaysian Chinese communities and culture. Committed to translating scholarship into public impact, she initiated the Chinese Dialect Festival at Universiti Malaya in 2024. The festival connects students, schools, clan associations, cultural organisations and local communities through national secondary-school competitions, exhibitions and cultural programmes that promote dialect appreciation, use and intergenerational transmission. She also contributes to curriculum development, programme accreditation, postgraduate supervision, academic assessment and public dialogue. Her contributions have been recognised through the Silver Prize at LITEC 2020 and Universiti Malaya’s Excellence Service Award in 2026.
