Professor Dr.Umah Rani Kuppusamy obtained her honours degree in Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) from the University of Malaya in 1989 and PhD (Biochemistry) from the National University of Singapore in 1994. She joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in November 1996. She is currently a Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biomedical Science. She has served as Head of the Department of Biomedical Science for several terms which ended in February 2021. She has been involved in teaching Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology for Biomedical Science undergraduates for more than 25 years. She is the recipient of the Excellent Lecturer Award (Sciences) in 2013 in recognition of her academic contribution to teaching. She is also involved in designing and developing the Responsible Conduct of Research course for the Master of Research Ethics degree programme. She has been successful in establishing links between several Universities in Asia and was among those instrumental in forming the Asia-International Biomedical Science Consortium. She was the Expert Advisor for the Biomedical Science section (preparation of the Allied Health Science Profession Bill). She is also an honorary member of the Allied Health Science Deans’ Council, Malaysia and the Joint Technical Committee of the Malaysian Health Science profession (representing the Deans’ Council). She has been the advisor of the Malaysian Biomedical Science Association since 2016. She was listed in the “Health Professionals of The World -2015”, International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB)-United Kingdom since 2021 and Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences since 2022. Prof.Umah’s research interest revolves around natural products (plants and mushrooms) as well as on the mechanism of etiology and complications of diseases (especially obesity and related complications) in the context of free radicals, antioxidant and oxidative stress. She has published extensively in ISI-ranked journals with an H-index of 30 (ISI). She has supervised more than 18 Masters and 15 PhD students and has a few ongoing Masters and PhD students. She is also the recipient of several local and international innovation awards/medals and has several patents to her credit. She has served the community through several religious and charitable organisations and in recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the “Ambassador for World Peace” by the Universal Peace Federation.
