Dr Tan Kay Sin graduated from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 1993. He undertook basic internal medicine training at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He is dual certified in internal medicine and neurology, having obtained MRCP(UK) in 1997 and further subspecialty training in neurology. He joined as lecturer in 1999 and completed subspecialization in neurology, stroke and neurosonology with attachments in the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005, Associate Professor in 2007 and full Professor in 2011. He was also a Fulbright Scholar to the United States in 2002 and was Visiting Fellow to the National Stroke Research Institute, Melbourne, Australia under the Australia-Malaysia Institute Grant in 2008. He received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 2007, Apart from a full time academic position, Dr Tan is also a consultant neurologist at the University of Malaya Specialist Centre and the University of Malaya Medical Centre. He is the immediate past President of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences, a position he held from 2008 until 2010. In this leadership role, he has the additional role of organizing the annual scientific meeting for the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences. He also co-organised with senior neurology colleagues in April 2009, the ASEAN Neurological Association Congress in Kuala Lumpur, an important regional neurology meeting. In November 2009, he was the Malaysian national delegate to the World Congress of Neurology , organised by the World Federation of Neurology. He was the organizing chairman of the Malaysian Society of Neurosciences, Annual Scientific Meeting from 2008. His research interest for nearly a decade has been in the area of cerebrovascular disease. He has also co-published in areas of Nipah encephalitis and was a member of the team from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya that won the Tun Mahatir National Awards and the Merdeka Award in 2006 and 2008 respectively. He has also been awarded the Sijil Perkhidmatan Cemerlang(SPC) or Excellent Service Award from the University of Malaya in 2007. He was the prinicipal investigator to several large international clinical trials on acute and secondary prevention of ischaemic stroke including POST, CHARISMA, PROFESS, SAINT, VITATOPS, PERFORM, CLAIR and the REACH registry. He has successfully attracted and accumulated a total amount of research funding worth RM 1 million from stroke research over the last seven years with the support of the Division of Neurology and the Clinical Investigation Centre, University of Malaya Medical Centre. These funds have been used for further research studies and for the training of neurology fellows. He also has funding from several competitive short term University Research Grants and obtained joint grants with the National University of Singapore and Universiti Sains Malaysia collaborators. He was also the Department of Medicine Clinical Phase 3a Coordinator from 2003 to 2009. During this time, he was responsible with other members of the faculty for training many cohorts of medical students. Some of these students have joined as clinical lecturers themselves. He is now the overall Phase 3a coordinator for the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. Dr Tan has lectured widely in international and national meetings, with more than 30 presentations to date. More recently, he has developed a research interest in the clinical profile and molecular biology of young stroke patients. He has also published more than 40 articles in regional, international peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and international textbooks. More importantly, he has always found time to spend at home with his wife and 2 children despite his busy schedule.
