Siti Zubaidah Ismail is a leading scholar in contemporary Islamic criminal law and criminal justice, with particular expertise in Malaysia and comparative Southeast Asian perspectives encompassing Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. Her scholarship bridges Islamic jurisprudence, contemporary criminal justice, constitutional and human-rights discourse, and the practical implementation and reform of Shariah law. Her research has advanced contemporary debates on Islamic punishment and human rights, diyat and compensation, Shariah criminal offences, religious freedom, conversion and the interaction between Islamic law, State institutions and society. She has published more than 170 scholarly works and four books, supervised 20 PhD and 40 Master’s students, and received national and international academic awards. Her scholarly standing is reinforced by visiting academic appointments in Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and Türkiye, including appointments as Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar. She has also held senior academic leadership and research-management positions at Universiti Malaya. Beyond academia, she translates scholarship into law reform, policy and societal impact through her appointments with MAIPk and MAIK, contributions to Shariah legislative reform, and human-rights advocacy through CENTHRA and MACSA.
