Prof. Dr. Surinderpal Kaur is the Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics at Universiti Malaya and a leading scholar in critical discourse studies and multimodality. Holding a PhD from Lancaster University, her research spans over three decades, focusing on discrimination, Islamophobia, migration, extremism, gender, and sexuality. She has been an invited speaker on Islamophobia by the Director-General of the OIC at the UN and by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her current research focuses on climate change communication and education. As Co-Chair of the UM Committee for Climate Change, she advises the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and represents UM and Malaysia at COP29 (UNFCCC) in Baku. She is committed to securing UM’s observer status at COP and leading national climate research efforts. She is also Vice-Chair of the Malaysian Language Deans Council and leads the national taskforce on Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL). She is pioneering efforts to establish a Digital Humanities Centre at FBL, serving as a national and ASEAN hub for language and digital innovation. Beyond academia, she is actively involved in youth leadership programmes for Malaysia’s Punjabi and Sikh communities. Her work exemplifies inclusive, socially responsive, and globally impactful scholarship.
