PROF. DR. STEFANIE SHAMILA PILLAI

A Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya, with internationally recognised expertise in varieties of English, multilingualism, and language use in education. A leading authority on endangered languages, particularly Melaka Portuguese, digitally archived in the Endangered Languages Archive. Has co-produced community resources including a mobile app to support language revitalisation. Research outputs include a trademark and nine copyrights. Widely consulted by local and international media and stakeholders on English use in Malaysia and endangered languages. Currently serves as consultant for Malaysian English entries in the Oxford English Dictionary and for a cultural project with the National Department for Culture and Arts Melaka. Recognised through major honours, including UM’s Academic Icon 2024, election as Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, (ASM) and recipient of ASM Top Research Scientists Award 2024. Holds international appointments and recognition, including as Mercator Fellow (University of Hamburg).
