ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. TANG SWEE SEONG

BSc (Hon)(Biochem)(UM), MSc (Microb)(UM), PhD (Molecular Microb) (ANU, Australia)
Associate Professor Dr Tang Swee-Seong is a microbiologist at Universiti Malaya specializing in bacteriophage therapy and sustainable biotechnology. He obtained his PhD in Molecular Microbiology from The Australian National University and leads research on antibiotic-free solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in aquaculture. His team was awarded a Gold Medal at ITEX 2025 for developing a biodegradable microcapsule system that delivers bacteriophages to treat fish infections without antibiotics. The project, AquaPhage – Targeted Phage Therapy for Sustainable Aquaculture, has also been selected for the UM Deep Tech Accelerator Programme, with two intellectual property filings completed. Beyond research, he led Team Malaysia to its best-ever achievement at the International Biology Olympiad 2025, securing one Silver and one Bronze medal. Dr Tang has published extensively in reputable international journals and is committed to advancing sustainable science, translational innovation, and national talent development.
