Syafiq Faliq Alfan, also known as SEFA, is a performing artist, educator, and cultural researcher whose work focuses on cultural change in performing arts and the history of Asian performing arts traditions. He received his PhD from Hiroshima University in 2022, where he studied Mak Yong and Noh through motion capture technology. Since 2011, SEFA has been part of the Ipoh artist-collective Projek Rabak, where he now serves as director. As an artist, he combines Etienne Decroux’s Corporeal Mime with improvisational elements of Malay traditional arts, performing locally and internationally since 2007. His research centers on the body in performance and its relationship with space, audience, and technology. Beyond performance, SEFA is also a creative writer, with published works such as Melankolia Bisu (2014) and Novel Eksperimental (2013). Currently, his interests extend to memory studies and the philosophy of history, especially in understanding Mak Yong’s past. He also engages with Digital Humanities, exploring how aesthetics, ecology, local wisdom, identity, and biomechanics intersect with media and technology. He views performing arts as a field that must address broader issues of sustainability, society, and education, encouraging integrated and impactful approaches for postgraduate research.
