DR. MOHD ZIEAUDDIN BIN KUFIAN

Dr. Mohd Zieauddin Kufian (M.Z. Kufian) is a physicist and energy materials researcher at Centre for Ionics, Universiti Malaya, Department of Physics, Universiti Malaya. His research focuses on battery technology and electrochemical energy storage, including dual carbon batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and battery safety at the material level. He played a key role in establishing the Battery Testing Laboratory at Universiti Malaya, which supports applied research, postgraduate training, and industry-linked projects. He holds a BSc, MSc, and PhD in Physics from Universiti Malaya and has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, in addition to book chapters and intellectual property related to battery materials and fabrication. His work is supported by sustained research funding from government agencies, universities, and industry. Notable projects include industry-funded research with TATA Chemicals (India) on the electrolysis of ammonium chloride, as well as grants on solid polymer electrolytes, lithium-ion and lithium–air batteries, battery prototyping for UPS systems, and nano-structured electrode materials. Collectively, these projects span fundamental studies of ion transport mechanisms to applied battery development, with total funding exceeding RM1.3 million over his career. He maintains active collaborations with international institutions and industry partners and has led consultancy projects involving battery electrodes and graphene-based materials. He is a certified HRD Corp Exempted Trainer and the proposer of the STEMeNERGY programme, which promotes hands-on learning in energy storage and sustainability among school students.
