CURRICULUM VITAE

DR. MARZELAN BIN SALLEH

Dr Marzelan Salleh is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Malaya. He has lived and worked in both Malaysia and the United Kingdom, developing a distinguished career as a composer, researcher, and educator. His compositional output including Bani Jawi, Bangkit, Puteri Gunung Ledang, Rukun, Hijrah, and Tarian Cinta integrates Asian musical nuance with Western European traditions, synthesised within transcultural contemporary frameworks. His works have been performed in the United Kingdom and Malaysia alongside eminent composers such as John Pickard, Michael Ellison, Tazul Izan Tajudin and Dieter Mack. Notable performances include the New Music in the South West festival, Bristol New Music Festival, the Contemporary Music Venture Concert Series, and the University of Bristol’s New Music Ensemble Concerts. He has collaborated with internationally recognised ensembles and performers, including Quatuor Bozzini, the Brodowski Quartet and the New Music Ensemble Bristol. His practice has been further enriched through composition workshops and masterclasses with distinguished composers and musicians, among them Pierre Boulez, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, John Pickard, Trevor Wishart, Philip Glass, and Nigel Clarke. He obtained his PhD in Composition from the University of Bristol under the supervision of Prof Michael Ellison, following a Master’s in Composition at the University of Salford with Prof Alan Williams. His musical education began as a saxophonist in the St. John Institution Kuala Lumpur marching band, before pursuing clarinet studies and graduating with a first-class Bachelor in Music Composition from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. A longstanding dedication to composition earned him a scholarship to pursue postgraduate study in contemporary music composition in the United Kingdom. In recognition of his contributions to cross-cultural artistic collaboration, He was awarded a British Council Connections Through Culture grant, under which he developed Nada Nusantara, a project fostering performance exchange and creative dialogue between Malaysian and UK musicians. Further supporting international engagement, he has served as Visiting Lecturer at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) and Universitas Negeri Padang, Indonesia, contributing to regional academic exchange and mentorship in music composition and performance. He was also invited by the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, to participate in collaborative research and performance projects, reinforcing his engagement with European contemporary music networks. Dr Marzelan Salleh undertook a sabbatical at the University of Salford, Manchester, UK, in 2025, during which he advanced practice-based compositional research and strengthened international collaborations. His research, teaching, and creative practice continue to explore the intersections of contemporary composition, transcultural aesthetics, and performance, establishing him as a leading figure in both Malaysian and international contemporary music spheres.
