Marlenny Deenerwan is a Malaysian theatre scholar, practitioner, and creative writer with over 25 years in the field. She holds a PhD in Theatre Performance from Monash University (2016), alongside a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Performing Arts in Drama from Universiti Malaya, and a Diploma in Creative Writing from ASWARA. Before academia, she taught at SM Shan Tao, Kota Kinabalu, and worked as a sub-editor at Daily Express Sabah. Her research centers on Malaysian traditional and ritual theatre - including Bobolian rituals, Wayang Kulit, Makyong, and Bangsawan - and more recently on interactive theatre as an educational tool, notably the DraFDidik module, which won a Silver Award at the 2023 International Education Innovation Expo. As a creative writer since 1999, she has produced over 20 stage scripts and numerous TV dramas, alongside documentaries, articles, and lyrics. Her directing portfolio spans nearly three decades, from No Smoking Please (2003) to Muzikal Uda & Dara (2025). She co-founded two theatre groups and has earned major honors, including Best Actress (2003), Best Director (2009), and the 2025 Cameronian Boh Award for Best Original Script. She has also authored several academic books and held leadership roles, including president of the ASWARA Alumni Association and chairperson of Persatuan Rumpun Seni Mekar Budaya Kuala Lumpur.
