My research is situated within applied linguistics, focusing on the psychological and emotional dimensions of additional language learning. Another area of interest is sensory linguistics, particularly how sensory experiences are represented and evaluated through language. My current research explores olfactory language and online perfume reviews, examining how people communicate experiences of smell through linguistic resources. This work draws on corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and discourse analysis, with a particular interest in electronic word of mouth (eWOM) as a form of naturally occurring digital discourse. Methodologically, I employ quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, including computational text analysis, corpus-based methods, and visual methodologies such as photovoice. I have authored two books on the psychology of language learning: Stereotypes and Language Learning Motivation: A Study of L2 Learners of Asian Languages (Routledge, 2020) and Emotions and Affect in Language Learning: A Photovoice Study of Learning in Lockdown (Routledge, 2025). My research has appeared in journals including Applied Linguistics, System, Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, and Computers in Human Behavior. I welcome interdisciplinary research collaborations in these areas.
