Dr Kishneth Palaniveloo received his early education in Kedah (1991 to 2003) and pursued his tertiary education at University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in the field of Marine Science from 2004 to 2007. Throughout his education at UMS, he was trained as a PADI divemaster, being involved in teaching, recreational diving and research scientific diving. Upon completion his Bachelors’ degree, he was attached to the Kota Kinabalu Fisheries Department and the Marine Research Foundation (MRF) for a brief period before pursuing a Masters’ degree in Fermentation Biochemistry (2008 – 2010) and a doctorate degree in Marine Ecological Chemistry during which he was trained in techniques of compound isolation and structure elucidation. During his PhD, he had isolated close to 80 secondary metabolites from marine and terrestrial resources comprising of new chemical compounds and skeleton. Upon graduation, he was employed as a researcher under a JICA project for a year, involving in study of soil microbial community structure. He also attended international training stints at Jeju National University (Korea) and Kyushu University (Japan). As of 2017, he is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences in University of Malaya and holds position as the laboratory coordinator. His research interest is in the diversity of secondary metabolites in marine invertebrates such as soft coral, sea slugs as well as seaweed. His research interest is in 1) soft coral species and chemical diversity 2) algal metabolites and biochemistry 4) microbial community studies using NGS and 4) Carbon stock assessment and adaptation of mangrove with environmental changes. He supervises Masters in Biotechnology, Masters in Philosophy and PhD students. Dr Kishneth is also the Honorary Secretary for the Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences an independent NGO actively involved in the activities and awareness of marine conservation in Malaysia. He is also a member of the Malaysian Society of Natural Products and Center for Natural Products Research and Drug Discovery (CENAR).
