Dr Tay Kheng Soo is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. His research interests span environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and the occurrence and transformation of emerging contaminants in the environment. His work particularly focuses on the development and application of analytical methods for understanding the behaviour, degradation, and removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products and other environmentally relevant pollutants. In addition to his environmental chemistry research, Dr Tay is actively involved in the development of affordable scientific instrumentation, laboratory automation, and maker-based approaches to chemistry education. His current academic interests include integrating digital fabrication, electronics, programming, artificial intelligence, and Industry 4.0 competencies into undergraduate chemistry curricula. Through the Maker-based Advancement in Chemical Education (MACE) framework, he seeks to strengthen the connection between chemistry education, instrumentation, computational skills, problem-solving, and future workplace requirements. Dr Tay also serves as the Coordinator of Makerspace@UM, where he supports interdisciplinary prototyping, innovation, entrepreneurship, and hands-on learning. He is actively involved in curriculum development, final-year project coordination, laboratory sustainability initiatives, and the design of digital systems for teaching and academic management. He also contributes to the scientific community as an Associate Editor and peer reviewer for international journals.
