DR. HAEZREENA BEGUM BINTI ABDUL HAMID

(PhD in Criminology)
Dr. Haezreena Begum Abdul Hamid is a Criminologist, Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya. Called to the Malaysian Bar in 1997, she has nearly three decades of legal and academic experience specialising in criminology, criminal justice, prisons, human trafficking, terrorism and violent extremism. She is a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Edinburgh and Sydney and an Expert on Counter-Terrorism and Human Trafficking on the International Criminal Court’s official List of Experts. She has led and contributed to major research and law-reform projects supported by the United States Embassy, European Union, ISIS Malaysia and BHEUU, including developing an online indicator framework for detecting risks associated with online extremism. Her extensive empirical research includes interviews with hundreds of convicted male and female prisoners, including those convicted of murder, kidnapping, sexual offences, drug trafficking, terrorism related offences, human traffickers and other types of violent crimes. She is the author of Terrorism and Reintegration in Malaysia (Palgrave Macmillan), Playbook on Human Trafficking and Handbook on Human Trafficking, with The Voices of Women in Prison forthcoming from Emerald Publishing. Her achievements include the UM Excellent Lecturer Award (2024), UM Researcher’s Award (2025), and Faculty of Law Certificates of Excellence (2023, 2026).
