Dr. Haezreena Abdul Hamid is a Criminologist and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, with extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation since her admission to the Malaysian Bar in 1997. Her research focuses on human trafficking, incarceration, terrorism, gender and women’s rights, and serious crimes. She adopts a qualitative, field-based approach and has conducted thousands of hours of interviews with female prisoners, trafficked victims, and returnees from conflict zones such as Syria and Afghanistan. In recognition of her expertise in international criminal justice and human rights, Dr. Haezreena was appointed as an Expert by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Counter-Terrorism and Human Trafficking. She is the only Malaysian included in the ICC’s official List of Experts. Her contribution to Malaysia’s elevation to Tier 2 in the 2024 U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report was formally acknowledged by the Minister of Home Affairs. She received grants from ESIWA/EU and the U.S. Embassy of Kuala Lumpur for work on returnees, detainees, and capacity-building for enforcement officers, and evaluated two former Guantanamo Bay detainees. She currently serves as an expert witness in terrorism and the GISBH case.
