DR. PHANG KEAN CHANG

(Doctor of Philosophy (Pathology))
Dr. Phang is an experienced clinical scientist with a strong academic background and a breadth of expertise in various fields. He holds a Ph.D. in Pathology and has pursued dual master's degrees in Health Research Ethics, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, and Medical Sciences (Pathology). Additionally, he obtained a bachelor's degree in Biohealth Science. Currently, he primarily serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pathology at Universiti Malaya and holds the position of Head of Unit at the University of Malaya Medical Centre-Medical Research Ethics Unit (MREU). Besides, he has been recently appointed as a Senior Research Fellow of Global Health Bioethics Network (GHBN), in collaboration with the Ethox Centre, University of Oxford. Dr Phang is also instrumental in coordinating Faculty's external collaboration where he has held the role of partnership manager of the Internationalisation Unit, UM Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Phang's research endeavors primarily revolve around precision medicine, encompassing molecular testing for cancer diagnosis, digital pathology, cancer and cell therapy, as well as the exploration of novel biomarkers for diagnostic purposes. In the realm of research ethics, he has acquired extensive training and fellowships under renowned institutions such as the World Health Organization, Department of Bioethics, NIH United States, and WCG IRB-New York University Langone Health. His passion lies in investigating ethical issues related to emerging technologies and epidemic ethics, alongside the pursuit of enhancing the quality of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to ensure the protection of human subjects in health research. In recognition of his contributions to the scientific community, Dr. Phang has been appointed as an affiliate member of the Academy Sciences of Malaysia (YSN-ASM) since 2020. Moreover, his outstanding achievements led to an honorary appointment as a Chartered Scientist of the UK Royal College of Biology in 2023.
