ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. CINDY TEH SHUAN JU

Associate Professor Dr. Cindy Teh Shuan Ju is an internationally recognised microbiologist, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) researcher, entrepreneur, and IFBA-certified Biorisk Management Professional at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She has secured over RM11 million in competitive research funding, with 70% from international agencies and collaborators, and published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Teh leads multinational and multicentre research on antimicrobial resistance, pathogen genomics, microbiome science, infection prevention, and One Health. Her work integrates genomics, rapid diagnostics, and implementation science to strengthen infectious disease surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare practices, including research on behavioural factors influencing hand hygiene compliance. She is the Founder of Aptanova, a biotechnology startup developing innovative aptamer-based technologies for rapid pathogen detection and infection control. Internationally recognised as a global trainer in biosafety and biosecurity, she has strengthened laboratory biorisk management through regional and international capacity-building initiatives. Her contributions have been recognised with the L'Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talent Fellowship (Malaysia) and the MSIDC–Institut Mérieux Young Researcher Award. Committed to public engagement, she leads AMR education programmes for schoolchildren and authored the AMR Diary (2023), promoting antimicrobial stewardship and translating scientific knowledge into societal impact.
