Chung Lip Yong, is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Founding Member of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He received his doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Cardiff, in 1990, and joined Cardiff University as a research associate focusing on SERC and industrial sponsored research. Upon returning to Malaysia in 1995, he joined the University of Malaya contributing to the establishment of the Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine as the second oldest Department/School of Pharmacy in Malaysia, which has trained about 1000 pharmacists to date. He has made major contributions to the curriculum development and teaching of pharmacy undergraduates especially in the area of pharmaceutical chemistry. Dr Chung has also contributed to postgraduate training, and research and development in pharmaceutical sciences and related disciplines. He has supervised more than 30 postgraduates including MSc and PhDs. His recent work focuses on the discovery of bioactive compounds from natural products, the design of bioactive molecules of pharmacological interest and targeted delivery of nanostructure and polymeric based therapeutics. He has written more than 80 refereed journal articles, and over 90 other papers and industrial reports, and 20 patents. He has consulted for numerous international and local companies. This include a long term research collaboration and consultancy on the commercialization of seaweed for a Sabah-based company Tacara Sdn. Bhd in Tawau, which currently exports 700 tons of high grade semi-refined carrageenan to the international markets annually. He has accepted invitations to serve on editorial boards for several journals, and regularly serves as a reviewer for Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Nature Publisher, Bentham Press and Wiley. Dr Chung has also served as the chairperson for scientific committee for the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Conference on numerous occasions. He has acted as an assessor for research funding bodies of the governments of Malaysia and Hong Kong, and South Africa. He serves as postgraduate and/or undergraduate external examiners, and academic staff promotion external assessor for numerous local and overseas universities, including International Medical University, Monash University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Punjab University, Universiti Putra Malaysia and UniKL. His administrative and other experience include Head of Pharmacy Department, Head of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Unit, and membership of hospital Ethics Committees, scientific societies and professional bodies, membership of Drug Control Agency, Ministry of Health, Malaysia.
