CURRICULUM VITAE

PROF. DR. CHUNG LIP YONG

Lip Yong CHUNG, is an Honorary Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Founding Member of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He received his doctorate in pharmacy from the Cardiff University in 1990, where he served as a research associate/fellow focusing on SERC and industrial-sponsored research.   Upon his return to Malaysia in 1995, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, which is the second oldest Department/School of Pharmacy in Malaysia and has trained about 1200 pharmacists from 1995-2021. His contributions include departmental management as the head, infrastructure planning, strategic planning, quality management system, curriculum development and teaching pharmaceutical chemistry and related disciplines to pharmacy undergraduates.   Research and Postgraduate Contributions: Dr Chung has contributed to postgraduate training, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences and related disciplines. He has supervised more than 36 postgraduates including MSc and PhDs. Many are now in senior positions in academic institutions, industry (local and international) and government ministries/agencies. His recent research focuses on the discovery of bioactive compounds from natural products, the design of bioactive molecules of pharmacological interest, and targeted delivery of nanostructured and polymeric-based therapeutics.   He has authored over 115 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 110 other papers and industrial reports, and holds over 15 patents. He has consulted for numerous international and local companies and was recognized among the Top 2% scientists in the World in Medicinal & Biomolecular Chemistry for both single-year and career-long citation impact by Stanford University (2020-2025) (Ioannidis, John P.A., 2022, “September 2022 data update for "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators"”, Mendeley Data, V4, doi: 10.17632/btchxktzyw.4). Chung has contributed to the fields of free radicals and antioxidants/pro-oxidants in type IV contact dermatitis, wound healing cascades, and wound dressings. He was among the early researchers to demonstrate that endogenous antioxidant induction could mitigate the development of contact allergy and to study the bioactive and interactive properties of polymeric wound dressing materials. These works have been cited in OECD documents (safety data sheets) and research textbooks. His contributions also extend to photo- and sono-sensitizers, photodynamic, and sonodynamic nanotherapeutics. Editorial and Review Roles: Dr. Chung has served on the editorial boards of several journals and has frequently reviewed for Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Nature Publishing Group, Bentham Science, and Wiley. He has chaired scientific committees for the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Conference and served as an assessor for research funding bodies in the governments of Malaysia, Hong Kong, Europe, and South Africa.   Academic and Administrative Service: He has been an external examiner for postgraduate and undergraduate programs, a member of Board of Studies (UKM, UNIMAS and UniKL) and an academic staff promotion assessor for numerous local and overseas universities, including International Medical University, Monash University, Taylors University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Punjab University, Universiti Putra Malaysia, International Islamic University (IIUM), UCSI University, SEGi University and UniKL. He has held various administrative roles such as Head of Pharmacy Department, Head of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Unit, and membership in hospital Ethics Committees, scientific societies and professional bodies, and the Drug Control Agency, Ministry of Health, Malaysia.
