CURRICULUM VITAE

PROFESSOR IR. DR. CHING YERN CHEE

(NA)
Dr. Ching Yern Chee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaya. Dr. Ching joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Malaya (UM) after spending 10 years in packaging industries. She is a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council, UK, and a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia. Dr. Ching is actively engaging herself in research. Her main research area is on polymer nanocomposite, bionanocomposite coating, biomaterials, and functional materials. To date, she has secured more than RM 5.5 million in research grants and completed 35 research projects as the principal investigator. She has graduated 25 post-grad. candidates (17 PhD & 8 master). She has published more than 150 ISI-cited publication, 5 invited book chapters, and 6 filed patents. Her current standing of h-index is 34 (Web of Science). One of her significant achievements is the development of a novel composite coating with high FIR effectiveness and UV blocking properties for agricultural greenhouse film. This invention has successfully provided multifunctional roles to agricultural film at a lower processing cost and allows for optimum growing conditions.  Her works on the development of biodegradable mulch film has contributed to the reduction of plastic mulch film in landfills. Dr. Ching has been extensively involved in the research of composite products based on nanocellulose from agricultural residues and their applicability towards sustainable and advanced utilization. Her work has attracted great interest from the industries locally and internationally. She has won >20 awards at international exhibitions related to her research and inventions. Ching is appointed as university, national and international peer evaluation panel for Impact-Oriented Interdisciplinary Research Grant Programme (IIRG), Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Prototype Research Grant Scheme (PRGS), Trans-disciplinary Research Grant Scheme (TRGS), HLAF, Toray Science Foundation (MTSF),  Southeast Asia - Europe Joint Funding Scheme (JFS), Chilean National Agency for Research and Development, National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation (NCSTE) & Qatar National Research Fund. She is the Editorial Board Member of two SCI-Q1 journal i.e. the Journal of environmental Chemical Engineering and Frontiers in Pharmacology (section:  Integrative and Regenerative Pharmacology). Dr. Ching was awarded the "Leaders in Innovation Fellowship 2017" by the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) for her notable contributions to engineering education and advancements in the composite field. She was recognized as a "Top Research Scientist Malaysia 2020" by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. In 2022, Dr. Ching was selected as one of UM Researchers Among The World's Top 2% Scientists by Elsevier. Her publication titled 'Preparation and characterization of bioplastics from silylated cassava starch and epoxidized soybean oils' was awarded the Web of Science Highly Cited Paper recognition for the series 2023-12 with its status as a top 1% paper in the academic field of chemistry. She was also a recipient of the "Hitachi Fellowship 2019" and served as a visiting scholar at The University of Kitakyushu, Japan. She has established strong collaboration with researchers from China, and is appointed as the Visiting Professor of Dezhou University. She is serving in numerous capacities as external assessor, external evaluator, resource person, external examiner, advisor and international judge panel. She has been invited to contribute as keynote speaker, conference chair, program chair, technical programme committee and designated reviewer for more than 30 international conferences. Ching is an active member in the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). She is appointed as Deputy Chairman of The Marine Engineering & Naval Architecture Technical Division (MNATD), IEM for session 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 and sub committee on membership drive and promotions (MDP), IEM for session 2023/2024.
