CURRICULUM VITAE

ASSOCIATE PROF. DR. CHANG LI YEN

(NA)
Chang Li Yen is a molecular virologist at the Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, with over two decades of experience in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Her research focuses on viral pathogenesis, molecular epidemiology, host immune responses, and vaccine development, with particular emphasis on Nipah virus. She has contributed to understanding long-term immunity in survivors of the 1998–1999 Malaysian Nipah virus outbreak, including persistent antibody, memory B-cell, and T-cell responses more than 25 years post-infection, as well as viral evolution and virus–host interactions relevant to vaccine design. Li Yen was a member of the Universiti Malaya Nipah Encephalitis Investigation Team, recipient of the Inaugural Merdeka Award (2008), and the only Malaysian investigator funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), where she leads a project mapping T-cell epitopes linked to long-term immunity in Nipah survivors. She has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and is recognized internationally for her work in Nipah virus immunology and molecular virology. Li Yen is involved in teaching microbiology, biosafety, and biosecurity, and contributes to regional capacity building as a certified biorisk management professional. She has held leadership roles at Universiti Malaya, including Head of Department, Deputy Director of TIDREC, and Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, supporting institutional governance and infectious disease preparedness.
