Azirah Hashim is Professor Emeritus in the English Language Department at Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. She has held various leadership roles, including Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute, Director of the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism and Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. Her research focuses on English in multilingual contexts, internationalisation of higher education in ASEAN, and Academic and Professional Discourse. Her publications include English in Southeast Asia and ASEAN (2021) and Communicating with Asia: the Future of English as a Global Language (2016). Azirah served as President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) from 2021-2024 and has been involved in several international research projects, including Erasmus+ and Jean Monnet initiatives. She received the Georg Forster Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany (2009); the Trinity Long Room Hub TCD Ireland Fellowship (2020); and was FRIAS, University of Freiburg and Marie Curie Fellow (2022). In 2023, she was awarded Honorary Membership by the Linguistic Society of the Philippines and was elected Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. She also serves on numerous editorial boards and is a regular reviewer and external examiner.
