Md Azalanshah Md Syed is an Associate Professor at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya. He holds a BA in Media Studies (First Class, UM), a Master of Creative Arts in Screen Production (Flinders University), and a PhD in Communication Studies (RMIT, Australia). He has served as Coordinator for the Master of Media Studies Programme (2015–2016; 2024–2026), Head of Department (2017–2021), Editor-in-Chief of Jurnal Pengajian Media Malaysia (2020–2025), Deputy Dean (2022–2025), and Coordinator for the PhD Programme (2025–2027). He teaches Media, Culture and Society and Screen Production, with a focus on documentary filmmaking and pre-production research. His documentaries on Mak Yong (2015) and Sultan Abu Bakar of Johore (2006) were funded by FINAS and the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage. His research examines Asian popular culture, gender and Malay studies. His interdisciplinary team won silver and merit awards at MTE2021 for a mobile app supporting coronary heart disease rehabilitation (FRGS-funded). He also collaborates with media industries and NGOs, including Astro Awani’s #KitaJagaMalaysia campaign and his documentaries were shortlisted for the Freedom Film Festival (2018, 2019).
