The first Malaysian doctor to gain a PhD in Health Informatics, Awg Bulgiba Awg Mahmud is UM's first Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology and Health Informatics. He is the first public health physician to be made Senior Fellow by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the first Malaysian public health physician to accumulate these five fellowships (FFPH, FPHMM, FAMM, FASc, FISC). He has been Secretary-General for the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Council Member for the Academy of Medicine Malaysia (2019-2023), President of APACPH-KL (2014-2021), UM DVC (Academic and International, 2015-2018) and DVC (Research and Innovation, 2012-2015). He led the formulation of Malaysia’s National Policy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2021-2030 and has been a consultant several times including as Digital Health consultant for the Sarawak Public Health Master Plan 2050. Awg Bulgiba has published extensively and was lead author for “Strengthening Academic Career Pathways and Leadership Development”, a book used for the University Transformation Programme in Malaysia and sole author for “Viewpoints During A Pandemic”. Awg Bulgiba was awarded the Ma’al Hijrah Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research and Development by the Sarawak Government in 2013, UM Eminent Scholar Award and APACPH Excellence in Leadership Medallion in 2018.
