Dr. Amer Siddiq Amer Nordin is an academic psychiatrist, clinician-scientist and healthcare leader with over 20 years of experience spanning clinical care, research, executive leadership and national health policy. He is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine, Universiti Malaya, and previously served as Director of UMCares (2019–2025) and founding Head of the International Unit, Faculty of Medicine (2015–2019). His work integrates psychiatry, addiction medicine, implementation science and public health to translate evidence into sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery. Nationally recognised for his contributions to tobacco control and smoking cessation, he has developed innovative capacity-building programmes, contributed to Malaysia’s mQuit initiative, advised the Ministry of Health on tobacco control policy, and served on national task forces, including the Healthcare Work Culture Improvement Task Force. He has also provided expert advice to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. His current academic focus is advancing recovery-oriented psychiatry by promoting meaningful recovery, life engagement and functional outcomes alongside symptom improvement. Recognised as a 2018 Tatler Asia Gen.T Leader of Tomorrow, Dr. Amer is an active mentor, educator and science communicator who collaborates with international partners and engages policymakers, healthcare professionals and the public to advance mental healthcare in Malaysia and the region.
