The first Malaysian doctor to gain a PhD in Health Informatics, Prof Awg Bulgiba (MBBS, MPH, MAppStat, PhD, FFPH, FPHMM, FAMM, FASc) is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) and Professor of Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit) in the University of Malaya. He teaches epidemiology and medical statistics mainly to postgraduates and he currently carries out research in infectious diseases, modifiable chronic diseases and medical informatics. Prof Awg Bulgiba has been a consultant for several organisations and private companies. In addition, he continues to be an Associate Editor for the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health and Editor for the Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal. He is also an ad hoc statistical reviewer for numerous medical journals and continues to be a resource person in scientific writing.He is currently the President of APACPH-KL, Council Member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, member of the Plant-made Proteins Task Force, Research Committee of the Malaysian Health Promotion Board, National Specialist Register Committee (Public Health), National Steering Committee for the Science Act, National Defence R&D Committee, and MyREN Committee. Prof Awg Bulgiba has been an external examiner and assessor for several universities, was the founding Head of the Julius Centre UM (2008-2012), Chair for the University of Malaya Wellness Programme (2007-2009) and the Malaysian coordinator for the Asia-Europe CE & EBM Programme (2007-2010). He was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of UM from 2012-15, Director for the Global Planning and Strategy Centre from 2011-12, Deputy Dean (Undergraduate & Diploma Programs) from 2009-12 and Head for the Dept of Social and Preventive Medicine from 2006-09. In 2008, Prof Awg Bulgiba was the Organising Chair for the 40th Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference in Kuala Lumpur (7-9 Nov 2008) which was organised in a record 10 weeks from inception to actual conference. He was also the Organising Chair for the 1st Asia Pacific Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Conference (6-8 July 2012) and Organising Chair for the 3rd Asian Population Association (APA) Conference (27-30 July 2015). Prof Awg Bulgiba has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and has been Principal Investigator for a number of research projects. He has supervised to completion a total of 30 postgraduates in public health and is currently a supervisor/advisor for 6 doctoral students.
In 2010, in recognition of his contributions to public health, Prof Awg Bulgiba was made a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Royal College of Physicians, UK (FFPH by distinction), one of only a handful of fellows from South-East Asia. He was made a Fellow of Public Health Medicine Malaysia (FPHMM) by the Malaysian Public Health Physicians Association in 2012. In 2013, Prof Awg Bulgiba was made Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia (FAMM) and Fellow of the Academy of Science Malaysia (FASc) becoming the first public health specialist in Malaysia to simultaneously hold these four fellowships. He was awarded the Ma’al Hijrah Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research and Development by the Sarawak State Government in 2013.
