BIOGRAPHY

RESUME OF RESEARCH INTERESTS:

My research group focuses on the discovery, development and validation of prognostic and predictive cancer biomarkers important in the field of cancer; particularly breast and prostate cancer. This has contributed to the evidence base and co-authorship of national and international guidelines for the clinical testing of breast cancer biomarkers [NHS Breast Screening Programme No 58, 2005, American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists guideline recommendations for HER2, J Clin Oncol 2007; 25: 118-145, and estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor testing in breast cancer, J Clin Oncol 2010; 28: 2784-2795]. Current breast cancer research focuses on the molecular pathways and biomarkers implicated in tumours that do not respond to current treatment, either through lack of expression of HER2 and hormone receptors or through drug resistance; this is in collaboration with Bristol University and the University of the West of England, UK. My other main area of research revolves around the role of the TMPRSS2/ERG fusion gene in prostate cancer. These projects have been funded by a range of both internal and external funding bodies (to include North Bristol NHS Trust, the Endocrine Society, the IBMS, the MRC and the Friends of the Oncology Centre, Bristol).
