BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Yong Adilah Binti Shamsul Harumain is a senior lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, University Malaya. She was the master's research coordinator in 2022 and is currently a task force member of the Faculty of Built Environment at QS WUR. She is also now the Deputy Head Protem for the Smart Mobility Center of Excellence at UM. Currently, she supervises seven PhD students on various topics within the scope of transportation and mobility, urban design, and urban planning.

As a researcher, she is trying to further understand women's mobility in transportation, particularly in the Asian region, due to the implications of motorization and the rising percentage of working women in recent decades. Dr. Adilah and her team are the first researchers to explore the Machinoeki concept in Malaysia. She was awarded the Sumitomo Foundation Research Grant in 2016 and again in 2021. She was awarded an AHRC Research Networking UKRI grant that enables her to work with Coventry University, UK, the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), and DesignPAK, Pakistan, collaborators in 2018 on barriers to women's mobility.

Dr. Adilah incorporates her research into her undergraduate teaching to make it come to life and feel relevant, and she works closely with the Parliament Member of Lembah Pantai to empower the community of Lembah Pantai. Other than lecturing, she is also involved with Community Related Grants (UMCARES) and Fundamental Research Grants (FRGS) awarded by the Ministry. She was also involved in an integrated research project (IIRG) with the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya on active transportation research. Recently, she received the Presidents' Forum of Southeast Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU) grant, working with National Cheng Kung University, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), and University Science Malaysia.

She also received the AUA Scholars Grant Award 2020/2021, which allows her to conduct a project with Universitas Indonesia on women's mobility. She is also a member of the APRU Children and Youth Working Group, the APWiL Mentorship Programme as a mentee, and is involved in the Women Leadership Foundation and the ASB Accredited Certificate Programme. She is an active graduate member of the Malaysia Institute of Planners and the Board of Town Planning Malaysia, a member of the Transportation Science Society Malaysia, a member of the UM Cultural Heritage Research Centre, and a member of the Perak Heritage Society. Dr. Yong Adilah welcomes any collaboration in research and projects related to women in transportation, as well as research related to urban design and heritage.

During the time of colonization, modern town planning was influenced by colonizer s town planning style, and its function was mainly to serve the needs of the colonizer. The gridiron street pattern in Taiping town was established during colonization, and it is unfavorable for motor vehicle due to its design. How ever, in keeping up with newer towns, more development and attraction needs to be built. On the other hand, it is uncertain for Taiping town could contain such increase in traffic volume as a result of more development in future. This paper describe our pi lot study to suggest street pattern in determining travel behavior.
